I grew up in Connecticut, went to school in Massachusetts and Connecticut, and worked for a few years in New York City, Washington DC, and Baltimore. Now I’m getting to know my new, adopted state of Delaware. My own pediatrician inspired me to go into pediatrics, and the rest is history! Children are our present and future. The effect you have on a child now can alter their life, as my pediatrician did for me. Their endless potential is why I love working with kids. I also truly enjoy being a resource and comfort for the families of my patients. Parents are often going through a tough time when they meet me, and I want to be a caring and competent point-person for them, so they feel confident in the care they receive while in the hospital. First and foremost, I’m passionate about healing children, while keeping them mentally and psychologically thriving. I look to care for the whole child, not just one “problem” or “disease.” This includes advocating for children and families in the medical system, society and government. We need to provide a healthy environment for children to grow and thrive, and that begins and continues outside the hospital. Doctors have a powerful voice in society and I want to use mine to make the lives of our kids and families better and easier. I also care about providing clear education and answers (as much as possible) to our families, and using whatever tools possible to help them understand the medical information we are providing them. I try to get my patients the best outcomes possible during their hospital stay, while keeping aspects of their life and personality intact. I try to provide comfort and explanations for families. I teach medical students and residents, not just science and medicine, but also these humanistic values. I advocate for children with insurance companies, hospital committees, national organizations, and state and federal governments. I support policies that improve children’s and families’ lives. I think there are few things that tug more at our collective heartstrings than seeing a sick child. I believe that there is an innate and powerful desire within all of us to help children recover from illnesses, injuries, trauma or any other painful experience, and to help them get back to their usual selves. As a general pediatrician that specializes in inpatient medicine, I take this responsibility seriously, and I get tremendous joy in helping children recover and thrive. Kids are so resilient and they bounce back from so much — it’s truly inspiring to be a part of it. I’m passionate about delivering high-quality medical care to every patient and family I interact with. I believe effective communication is the best way to reach that goal. I strive to listen attentively to my patients and their parents, so I may be in the best position to address their needs and concerns. I try to include parents in the medical decision-making process for their children, and to not create plans that are confusing or difficult to follow. Additionally, high-quality medical care requires effective communication between all members of the care team, so I make it a point to ensure that physicians, nurse practitioners, bedside nurses, social workers/case managers, students and all other members of the medical team are on the same page regarding each patient’s daily plan of care. I also believe that all doctors (especially pediatricians) are lifelong teachers and lifelong students. I am passionate about teaching medical students and pediatric resident physicians during bedside rounds, lectures and small group discussions. I enjoy augmenting these traditional teaching methods with simulation-based training. I am a certified Clinical Simulation Instructor, and also teach courses in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) to physicians, nurses and other healthcare providers. I’m a firm believer that simulation-based training and experiential learning helps us anticipate problems, and be better prepared when an emergency truly arises. Practice makes perfect. Being in the hospital with a sick child is usually a frightening and stressful time for any family. I try to decrease some of that anxiety for our families by listening attentively and patiently, communicating effectively, and leading our multidisciplinary team of providers to work together and deliver exceptional care to each patient and family we are fortunate to meet. My mother’s career as a nurse started my interest in medicine. I volunteered as a candy striper during high school and worked as a nursing assistant through college. After college and medical school in my home state of Ohio, I moved to Delaware for a Nemours residency that combined pediatrics with physical medicine and rehabilitation. Physical medicine and rehabilitation is a way to help children with neuromuscular conditions reach the highest function that they can. I find my patients fun to work with, I love watching them grow, and I enjoy getting to know them and their families. The kids I treat inspire me with their resilience. I’m passionate about helping families of children with neuromuscular injuries or congenital issues become active, informed participants on their child’s care team. It takes a group effort to help an injured child return to prior function or to help a child with a chronic condition make the most of function they have. I make the patient and family’s goals my own. We may be trying to return a child to sports quickly after a concussion or helping a child with a chronic condition participate in meaningful activities. Rehab at Nemours means physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers and others working together with the family. Teamwork is one of our strengths. Scott L. Weiss, MD MSCE FCCM is an associate professor of pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson University and division chief of critical care medicine at Nemours Children’s Hospital. Previously, Dr. Weiss was on the faculty at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he earned recognition as an international expert in pediatric sepsis. Dr. Weiss’ NIH-funded research focuses on epidemiology, fluid resuscitation and mitochondrial dysfunction in pediatric sepsis. Medicine offers a rare opportunity to engage with an individual at a vulnerable point of suffering from illness or injury, especially in critical care. I wear this as a badge of humility and respect for our patients and families. When the patient is a child, the trust offered by a family is particularly noteworthy and opportunity to support health and well-being is particularly impactful. I am also constantly amazed that, despite not feeling their best, children look to play, smile and enjoy life rather than seeing themselves as patients. In the intensive care unit, I am inspired every day by the children and their families, which drives me to provide the best care possible. My clinical focus is on children with sepsis, which is a medical emergency of life-threatening organ failure caused by a severe infection. I have been privileged to work with local, national and international teams to optimize systems and methods to recognize and treat sepsis in children to reduce negative impacts that this illness can have on families. In addition to my clinical responsibilities in the pediatric ICU, I work as a scientist studying mechanisms of organ failure during sepsis. In particular, I focus on the role of mitochondria in sepsis. Mitochondria are the parts of our cells that produce the energy our body needs to stay healthy. My research seeks to understand how sepsis damages mitochondria, in order to develop new therapies that will promote recovery from sepsis-induced organ failure. Chief, Delaware Valley Primary CareAssociate Program Director, Pediatric Residency I try not to rush my patients and their families. I listen to them and encourage them to talk about all of their needs while we’re together. There is nothing that I enjoy more than interacting with kids and their families, and there’s nothing more rewarding than caring for children. Whether I’m telling jokes, doing magic tricks, or speaking in my Donald Duck voice, I always try to find a way to bond with my patients. Helping children lead healthy lives! One of the most important ways I express this is through teaching. I love teaching at all levels, from my patients and their families to my medical students and pediatric residents.
