As a practicing oncologist and clinical translational researcher, his research has been pivotal to improve the quality of breast cancer biomarker testing in breast cancer, including HER2 and estrogen receptor testing. Among his leadership accomplishments is ensuring that sophisticated laboratory findings are translated into improved clinical care in breast cancer. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), a Komen Scholar and a Breast Cancer Research Foundation investigator. He has served as associate editor for Journal of Clinical Oncology, and serves on the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Guideline Steering Committee. He is a leader of the Translational Breast Cancer Research Consortium (TBCRC), and one of the principal investigators of the Evolutionary Clinical Trial for Novel Biomarker-Driven Therapies (EVOLVE) in Metastatic Breast Cancer, which was one of the three disease groups recently awarded by ARPA-H to conduct innovative trials using Advanced Analysis for Precision Cancer Therapy (ADAPT). After many years of service as Breast Committee Chair in the ECOG-ACRIN Clinical Trial Network of the National Cancer Institute (NCI), he was elected in 2024 as Co-Chair of the NCI Breast Cancer Steering Committee and appointed to the international steering committee of the Oxford Overview Collaborative, which are positions aimed at advancing clinical trials in breast cancer. At Johns Hopkins, he is an elected member of the Miller Coulson Academy of Clinical Excellence and was honored during the 125th Anniversary Living the Hopkins Mission celebrations of the JHU School of Medicine.
