I am a medical oncologist who primarily focuses on treating breast cancer. I’ve been at Duke Raleigh since 2007, and I also serve as the hospital’s chief medical officer. My favorite part of my job is the initial patient visit. It’s not unusual for patients to arrive for their appointment feeling fearful and anxious. I enjoy making them feel more comfortable and at ease with their diagnosis and treatment plan by the end of the visit. To further build that bond and trust, I encourage my patients to have full access to me, even on weekends or holidays, so I can help guide their treatment. I decided to become a doctor when I was 18 years old and heading to college. I felt that I would be passionate about taking care of people and my intuition turned out to be right. I am married to a physician and my oldest son is a medical school graduate, so medicine is now firmly in my family’s blood. Dr. Spiritos is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Inflammatory Breast Cancer. His top areas of expertise are Paget Disease of the Breast, Breast Cancer, Angiosarcoma, and Inflammatory Breast Cancer.

My interest in surgery came from a fascination in our ability to interrupt a disease process and the body’s ability to heal. I have dedicated my practice to surgical oncology of the breast, as I am passionate about helping women understand this complex and extremely personal diagnosis. Having walked through breast cancer with a family member, I recognize the importance of accurate risk assessment and informed decision making tailored to one’s own principles of health and wholeness. I became interested in medicine after my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I strive to provide individualized care to my patients, making sure that they understand their diagnosis and all treatment options. My goal is to get to know my patients by listening to their concerns, so we can make the best treatment decision together using my breast treatment expertise. Having gone though breast cancer treatment with my mom, I understand the impact of the diagnosis on the rest of the family. Treating breast cancer patients is my passion. I have special interest in treating young women with breast cancer, those with genetic mutation, and women with increased risk of breast cancer. I also pay attention to cosmetic outcomes while completing breast cancer surgery using oncoplastic techniques. I also perform nipple-sparing mastectomy whenever possible and utilizing new techniques such as minimally invasive robotic mastectomy and nipple sensation sparing mastectomies. When I’m not working, I enjoy traveling and spending time with friends and family. Dr. Chiba is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Inflammatory Breast Cancer. Throughout my career, one fundamental principle has guided my approach to patient care. For each patient, I strive to provide the kind of care that I would want for my own family and bring my best expertise, judgment and empathy to guide patients to restore and maintain long-term health. I know that the work that I do isn’t just for the patients who I directly care for, but it affects the whole family. Being a mother and a wife helps bring that perspective to the work I do. I never lose sight of how important it is to treat the whole family and to recognize the effects of disease on it. I believe that Duke offers patients the best and most advanced care that they can get anywhere in the world. I’ve been touched by cancer in my life. Just being on the receiving end of health care makes you very sensitive about the things required for the patient to feel like they are getting the best possible care. I became interested in breast surgery, because it combined surgery with science and the ultimate multidisciplinary patient care. Being a breast surgeon also allows me to work with other specialties and combine our talents to provide patients with the compassion and excellence they deserve. I grew up with a passion for math and science, and my mother always thought medicine would be a good fit. I, however, needed a little more convincing. It wasn’t until medical school and my discovery of surgery that I was sold on the idea. In addition to patient care, I participate in research related to breast cancer, breast cancer risk assessment, and benign breast disease. Working with the Breast Risk Assessment Clinic, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to meet women with an increased risk of breast cancer and help them determine the best management strategy for their breast health. I also enjoy working with residents and students, helping to train the next generation of physicians. My husband, also a surgeon at Duke Health, and I love to try new restaurants and spend time with family and friends. What is the definition of Inflammatory Breast Cancer?

Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rare and aggressive type of breast cancer in which the cancer cells block the lymph vessels in the skin of the breast. This type of breast cancer is called 'inflammatory' because the breast often looks swollen and red, or 'inflamed.' The skin may also look dimpled like the skin of an orange. IBC can be difficult to diagnose because there is no lump to feel or detect on a mammogram. Like other types of breast cancer, IBC can occur in men, but usually at an older age than in women.

When should I see an Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Inflammatory Breast Cancer doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
