His other interests include novel transplantation techniques like TCR alpha/beta T cell depleted BMT, graft versus host disease and BMT for high-risk inherited bone marrow failure syndromes, like Fanconi anemia. David Jacobsohn, MD, ScM, MBA, is the division chief of the Blood and Marrow Transplantation Program at Children’s National Hospital and full professor of Pediatrics at the George Washington University. He leads a program of upwards of 70 pediatric transplants per year. The program performs transplants in patients with malignant and non-malignant conditions, and has expertise with all stem cell sources including haplo-identical transplants. His expertise is in graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) clinical trials: reducing incidence of GvHD as well as novel therapies for GvHD. He has more than 10 years of experience in clinical research in pediatric GvHD. His work has included the study of novel drugs for chronic GvHD, classification criteria for chronic GvHD, and risk factor stratification in pediatric chronic GvHD. He is active in the BMT community at a national level. Examples of some current and prior roles include head of the GVHD committee for the Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium, member-at-large of the that Consortium, member of the Children’s Oncology Group Stem Cell Transplant Committee, member of the Clinical Trials Network State of the Science Pediatric Advisory Group. Dr. Jacobsohn has been instrumental in growing the capabilities of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program. For example, for the last five years the program is one of the few pediatric programs performing alpha/beta T cell depletion for haploidentical transplants. This novel method for GVHD prevention has significantly improved the outcome of haploidentical BMT at Children’s National. Additionally, he has been involved with the deployment of gene therapy for hemoglobinopathies. He successfully led Children’s National to become the first program in the country to collect stem cells for a commercial sickle cell gene therapy treatment.
