I became interested in medicine after studying tropical forest in college and realizing that I wanted more contact with people than trees. In medical school, I cared for children and adults with sickle cell disease and was inspired by the challenges and complexity of this chronic illness. I chose to train in both pediatric and adult hematology and now see both children and adults with non-malignant blood disorders. I joined Duke Health in July 2016 to direct the Adult Sickle Cell Program and focus on the care of children and adults with disorders of hemoglobin. Dr. Strouse is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Kienbock's Disease. His top areas of expertise are Sickle Cell Disease, Hemoglobinopathy, Congenital Hemolytic Anemia, Bone Marrow Aspiration, and Bone Marrow Transplant.

I am an orthopaedic surgeon who is the chief of hand surgery at Duke. Although we are referred to as “hand surgeons,” I treat many people with wrist and elbow conditions. Because the hand is so complex, patients who see me can have complaints that range from numbness and weakness to issues with range of motion. My grandfather, my grandmother, my mother and my father were all health care workers. I have wanted to be a surgeon since I watched M*A*S*H on the television as a child. I obtain great satisfaction from treating someone who has a very severe hand or arm injury, reconstructing the part and restoring its basic function. Duke has been the strongest hand surgery program in the country for the past 50 to 75 years. As chair of the program, I want patients to know that the best and the brightest providers are seeing them when they come to Duke. Dr. Ruch is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Kienbock's Disease. His top areas of expertise are Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tennis Elbow, Rhizarthrosis, Osteotomy, and Bone Graft.

I enjoy the challenge of helping patients with foot and ankle problems, including arthritis, tendon disorders or ruptures, and sports injuries. While my focus is my clinical practice, I keep my orthopaedic knowledge current by regularly participating as faculty in national and international orthopaedic foot and ankle conferences, conferences that frequently prompt me to bring advances to help the patients in my practice. I also continue to study many of the problems through dedicated foot and ankle research and share my clinical, surgical and research experience with national and international colleagues, the surgeons who attend the meetings, and the residents and fellows that I train each year. Whether it's a simple ankle sprain or a complex foot/ankle reconstruction, I take pride in providing my patients with the expertise and resources here at Duke University but with the availability and convenience of a community-based setting. I enjoy treating patients of all ages with the goal of getting them back to their full activity as quickly and safely as possible. Most importantly, I believe in educating my patients about their issues, allowing them to better understand their health, how it affects their overall well-being, and providing them with the knowledge to become an integral part of their own healing process. Although some patients may require surgery, I try my best to maximize non-surgical treatment, knowing how much of an impact these decisions will have on someone's day-to-day life. I’m an orthopaedic surgeon that specializes in elbow, wrist and hand injuries. I treat fractures, sports injuries, and acute traumas, as well as more common ailments like tendonitis, carpal tunnel, arthritis and trigger fingers. The best thing about going to work every day is that regardless of the number of patients I have at a time, I have the opportunity to make a difference in each patient’s life. Duke offers cutting edge technology and research, but we also excel in patient care. That combination makes Duke a special place for our patients. Outside of work, I like to spend time with my wife and two children. We enjoy following the Boston Red Sox and local baseball teams. For exercise I like to run, swim and play tennis. Dr. Richard is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Kienbock's Disease. His top areas of expertise are Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tennis Elbow, Mononeuritis Multiplex, Osteotomy, and Bone Graft.

I grew up in Durham and I am extremely proud to work here at Duke. All of my family members still call the Bull City home. Most of my education was completed in Durham, except for four years I spent down the road in Chapel Hill. I played football there and developed an interest in orthopaedic surgery that led me home. I specialize in hip and knee replacement and am very fortunate to do so. We have the ability to help so many people with these operations. It is extremely rewarding to help someone get back to doing the things they want to do with their life. Duke is the kind of place where you are challenged by the most difficult cases weekly and I appreciate that fact. We have great doctors in every field and we work as a team on every aspect of a patient's care once they enter the hospital. Dr. Bolognesi is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Kienbock's Disease. His top areas of expertise are Osteoarthritis, Acute Pain, Arthritis, Knee Replacement, and Hip Replacement.

My pursuit of a career in orthopaedics has come as no surprise to those around me. Growing up on our family horse farm in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, afforded me many mechanical tasks. Foot and ankle orthopaedics was an obvious choice: the diverse patient population, challenging surgeries, and the ability to help my patients get back to the activities they enjoy most. As medical missionary Dr. Albert Schweitzer said, “At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by the spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.” It is my responsibility, but also privilege as a surgeon, to empower my patients with ‘that light’, through optimism, knowledge and ultimately relief, through both non-operative and surgical means. I perform a variety of reconstructive procedures, including: fore/midfoot surgeries, ankle arthroscopy and cartilage restorative surgery, tendon/ligament repair/reconstruction, lower extremity fracture care, ankle replacement and fusion, diabetic Charcot reconstruction (including use of Ilizarov thin-wire frame techniques) and advanced deformity reconstruction for conditions related to arthritic, neurologic, congenital or acquired conditions. Dr. Schweitzer is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Kienbock's Disease. His top areas of expertise are Achilles Tendon Rupture, Metatarsalgia, Tendinitis, Osteotomy, and Tenotomy.

I am a hand and reconstructive surgeon who treats all conditions of the hand, wrist, and forearm and performs nerve and soft tissue reconstructive procedures all over the body. I have a particular interest in conditions causing poor blood flow to the hands and reconstruction of traumatic upper and lower extremity injuries. I trained as an engineer and try to be analytical and thorough in my approach, but I truly cherish most the personal engagement and interaction I have with my patients. During my medical training, I enjoyed learning about the complexities of the form and function of the hand, so I decided to focus my practice in this area. My father was a family medicine doctor and I have always felt that being a doctor is one of the highest callings. What is the definition of Kienbock's Disease?

Kienbock's disease causes one of the bones in the wrist (lunate bone) to slowly break down due to low blood supply. This process is called osteonecrosis. Symptoms include pain, swelling, limited movement, and decreased grip strength. The symptoms usually start in adulthood, but can occur at any age. The underlying cause of Kienbock's disease is unknown. Diagnosis is made by imaging studies.

When should I see a Kienbock's Disease doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Kienbock's Disease doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Kienbock's Disease doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Kienbock's Disease doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Kienbock's Disease doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Kienbock's Disease doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Kienbock's Disease doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Kienbock's Disease doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Kienbock's Disease doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Kienbock's Disease doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Kienbock's Disease doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Kienbock's Disease doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Kienbock's Disease doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Kienbock's Disease doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
