Dr. McCaffrey was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. She received a BS in biology and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Michigan. She then attended Wayne State University School of Medicine on a full academic scholarship and graduated in the top 5% percent of her class, including induction into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. She completed her general surgery residency at Emory University in 2006, followed by a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI in 2007.
