I have been honored to have spent my entire career, since completing my residency in 1986, working in the wonderful and diverse community of Hillsborough. Like many, I took a circuitous route to medicine. I studied chemistry in college and thought that I would pursue a career in research or public health. While these areas still interest me, I gravitated to medicine because of a desire to work directly with patients on improving their health and well-being. Through my training, which has included fellowship work in counseling, I have learned that many factors influence health, including relationships and other social supports. My husband and I are from the Triangle, so this change allowed us to come 'home'. We have five children, who we adore and who keep us very busy outside of work.
