"Titilayo Adegboyega, MD, is the chief of colorectal surgery at South Shore University Hospital. A board-certified colorectal surgeon, she specializes in treating cancer of the colon, rectum and anus, and benign conditions such as colon polyps, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticulitis, rectal prolapse, hemorrhoids, anal fissures and fistulas, and pelvic floor disorders. Dr. Adegboyega became interested in medicine as a child in her native Nigeria. ""I had a play doctor kit,"" she says. ""My mother worked in a hospital, so I was exposed to the health care system and aspired to influence what it could become."" In part thanks to this early influence, she maintains a deep interest in public health, especially in our increasingly globally connected society. Before joining Northwell in 2016, Dr. Adegboyega graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School. She then went on to complete her general surgery residency at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center and a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery at Rhode Island Hospital, the main teaching hospital of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Adegboyega works with a variety of health care providers to maximize her patients' care. For those who have cancer, she collaborates with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists and other specialists to develop a comprehensive treatment plan using the latest approaches to care. She may also work with gastroenterologists and urogynecologists, depending on a patient's condition. Whenever possible, Dr. Adegboyega performs minimally invasive surgical procedures, including robotic and laparoscopic approaches. She also specializes in colostomy and ileostomy reversal surgery and diagnostic procedures, such as colonoscopy. In addition to practicing at the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, Dr. Adegboyega is actively involved in resident and medical student education as assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. She is also affiliated with the Katz Institute for Women's Health. Above all, Dr. Adegboyega enjoys addressing people's health concerns and carefully walking them through the treatment process. ""I spend a lot of time explaining things to my patients, so they can be as active as of a participant in their health care as they want to be,"" she says. ""I'm grateful for and humbled by the experience.""". Dr. Adegboyega is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Lynch Syndrome. Her top areas of expertise are Mesenteric Venous Thrombosis, Hemorrhoids, Retroperitoneal Inflammation, Hernia Surgery, and Colonoscopy.

"Shirley Shiuh Leei Shih, MD, a colorectal surgeon at Northwell Health, specializes in treating all forms of benign and malignant colorectal disease-including Crohn's disease, diverticular disease and colorectal cancer-through minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery. She decided to become a doctor, like her father, while growing up Long Island, but it wasn't until she was in medical school at Albany Medical College, and attended a lecture on colorectal procedure, that she decided this was the direction she wanted to take.""My starting point was just wanting to help people, and as soon as I saw what type of new colorectal surgeries were being done, I could see the potential for boosting patient quality of life,"" she says. ""Instead of stem-to-stern incisions that led to long recoveries, we could do minimally invasive procedures that offered faster recovery and less pain.""Dr. Shih completed her residency at George Washington University Hospital and a fellowship at Cleveland Clinic in Florida, as well as at Indiana University School of Medicine. She spent seven years in private practice near Philadelphia, then returned to New York to join Northwell Health.""The team-oriented approach here is very strong,"" she says. ""There is such good communication and collaboration, both among partners in my practice and with everyone at Northwell generally. That gives patients more comprehensive support.""Currently, she's enhancing her surgical skills by learning robotic surgery, as she's passionate about offering patients more options for treatment. She's also an assistant professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Other efforts include training residents to provide enhanced patient care, and pursuing excellence in rectal cancer treatment at Huntington Hospital.Part of her lifelong learning comes from patients as well. ""What I've learned from them is to treat every patient as an individual,"" she says. ""It's important for me, and for all doctors, to tailor each discussion based on what a patient needs. I try to remember that with every patient conversation.""". Dr. Shih is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Lynch Syndrome. Her top areas of expertise are Pilonidal Sinus Disease, Retroperitoneal Inflammation, Diverticular Disease, Bladder Reconstruction, and Colostomy.

What is the definition of Lynch Syndrome?

Lynch syndrome, often called hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC), is an inherited disorder that increases the risk of many types of cancer. This includes cancers of the colon and rectum, which are collectively referred to as colorectal cancer. People with Lynch syndrome also have an increased risk of cancers of the stomach, small intestine, liver, gallbladder ducts, urinary tract, brain, and skin. Additionally, women with this disorder have an increased risk of cancer of the ovaries and the lining of the uterus (endometrial cancer). Women with Lynch syndrome have a higher overall risk of developing cancer than men with the condition because of these cancers of the female reproductive system. In individuals with Lynch syndrome who develop cancer, the cancer typically occurs in their 40s or 50s.

When should I see a Lynch Syndrome doctor near Commack, NY?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Lynch Syndrome doctor near Commack, NY?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Lynch Syndrome doctors near Commack, NY?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Lynch Syndrome doctors near Commack, NY?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Lynch Syndrome doctor near Commack, NY?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Lynch Syndrome doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Lynch Syndrome doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Lynch Syndrome doctor near Commack, NY?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Lynch Syndrome doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Lynch Syndrome doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Lynch Syndrome doctors near Commack, NY?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Lynch Syndrome doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Lynch Syndrome doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Lynch Syndrome doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
