Neurotologist Bryan Ward specializes in treating disorders of the ear and skull base, such as chronic ear disease, obstructive and patulous eustachian tube dysfunction, and conditions that cause dizziness, such as superior canal dehiscence syndrome, Meniere’s disease and bilateral vestibulopathy. Dr. Ward earned his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed residency training in otolaryngology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, followed by fellowship training in eustachian tube disorders at Boston Children’s Hospital. He returned to Johns Hopkins for additional fellowship training in otology and neurotology. He has research interests in vestibular physiology and pathophysiology, with a particular focus on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and interactions between strong magnetic fields and the inner ear. The magnetic fields of MRI machines can induce a force in the inner ear that may cause dizziness and vertigo. This is a fundamentally new way of stimulating the vestibular system, and he is studying how the brain adapts to this stimulus. Dr. Ward is interested in understanding novel disorders of the inner ear vestibular system by developing improved MRI and via temporal bone histopathology. His clinical research interests include eustachian tube disorders, the pathophysiology of inner ear disorders such as superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome, Meniere’s disease and bilateral vestibulopathy, as well as novel treatments, including the development of a vestibular implant (led by Charles Della Santina). Dr. Ward is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Meniere Disease. He is also highly rated in 8 other conditions, according to our data. His clinical expertise encompasses Meniere Disease, Vertigo, Patulous Eustachian Tube, Myringotomy, and Adenoidectomy. Dr. Ward is board certified in Head And Neck Surgery.

About Andrea Vambutas MD, FACSDr. Andrea Vambutas is the Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital. She is also Director for the Center of Hearing & Balance at the New York Head & Neck Institute. She is also the Medical Director of the Apelian Cochlear Implant Program and Professor of Otolaryngology & Molecular Medicine. She was instrumental in developing the Apelian Cochlear Implant Center, which celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2011. The center cares for infants and adults. The cochlear implant team is comprised of surgeons, audiologists, speech pathologists, social workers, sign language interpreters and deaf educators who provide all aspects of evaluation prior to, and rehabilitation following cochlear implantation. The center has been the recipient of many complicated otologic cases, and difficult clinical problems.Dr. Vambutas is a clinician-scientist that studies immune responses and their effect on hearing. There are three unique forms of hearing loss that may be amenable to medical therapy for recovery of natural hearing: Autoimmune Inner Ear Disease, Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss and Meniere s Disease. Timely treatment with steroids results in hearing recovery in about 60% of cases. Unfortunately, that response is lost over time with repetitive treatment. For those that fail to respond to corticosteroids, there are no alternate treatments. Deteriorating hearing is rehabilitated with hearing aids or cochlear implants. Despite how beneficial these devices are, they do not select for what we want to hear, unlike our brains that do it naturally and seamlessly. Her research interests are in the restoration of natural hearing in these steroid resistant patients. To this end, her laboratory has identified the critical role of an inflammatory protein, interleukin-1 (IL-1), in this disease. Her research group is running a NIH-sponsored phase I open-label clinical trial to determine if blockade of IL-1 can prevent further hearing loss in these steroid-resistant individuals (www.clinicaltrials.gov NCT01267994). Her laboratory is also trying to better understand the molecular mechanisms behind these diseases, specifically in distinguishing steroid sensitive and resistant hearing loss which would identify new biologic markers of disease.Awards and Recognition:Castle Connolley, Best DoctorsBest Doctors in AmericaOutstanding Teacher Awards, North Shore-LIJ Health System & Montefiore Medical CenterService Award, American Academy of Otolaryngology HNSProfessional Affiliations:Diplomat: American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck SurgeryFellow: American College of SurgeonsFellow, American Neurotology SocietyElected Member: New York Otologic SocietyElected Member: Henry Kunkel SocietyElected Member: American Association of Immunologists. What is the definition of Meniere Disease?

Ménière disease is a disorder of the inner ear that affects balance and hearing. This condition is characterized by sudden episodes of extreme dizziness (vertigo), a roaring sound in the ears (tinnitus), a feeling of pressure or fullness in the ears, and fluctuations in hearing. Episodes are often associated with nausea and vomiting, and they can severely disrupt activities of daily living.

When should I see an Meniere Disease doctor in The United States?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Meniere Disease doctor in The United States?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Meniere Disease doctors in The United States?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Meniere Disease doctors in The United States?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Meniere Disease doctor in The United States?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Meniere Disease doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Meniere Disease doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Meniere Disease doctor in The United States?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Meniere Disease doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Meniere Disease doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Meniere Disease doctors in The United States?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Meniere Disease doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Meniere Disease doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Meniere Disease doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
