Both of my parents were in the medical field and strongly influenced the direction of my career. I became a physical therapist, which I enjoyed immensely, but I thought I could make a different contribution to patient care by becoming a physician. In radiology, we are part of the medical team that helps diagnose or exclude an illness and we help to direct the course of our patient’s treatment. Working with children is an amazing experience. Kids are so resilient and bounce back from all types of difficult situations. They each have such a unique perspective and we try our best to tailor our interactive imaging procedures to the child. Sometimes this involves providing anatomy lessons to teen patients, other times it involves just “getting it over with.” We aim to make our imaging procedures as interesting and as comfortable as possible. My areas of interest include: Pediatric Body Imaging Fetal Imaging Child Abuse I try to provide the most accurate information based on our imaging studies to the patient’s medical team so that the child can be treated as quickly as possible. I am fortunate to work with an incredible group of medical practitioners at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children who share my passion to provide the highest quality medical care to all children. Even in the face of adversity and medical challenges, children show remarkable resilience. My patients inspire me on a daily basis to be the best physician I can be. I chose to specialize in pediatric pulmonary medicine and sleep medicine because these conditions affect a large amount of the general population, and I wanted to help children with a wide variety of disorders to live happy and healthy lives. I am passionate about helping each family learn to understand their child’s condition. By working with my patients to help them understand their underlying condition, triggers and treatments, my goal is to enable families to manage their children’s condition at home and stay out of the hospital as much as possible. I enjoy getting to know my patients and what activities they like to do when they are well. My proudest moments are seeing my patients doing what they love when healthy. I was born in India to a family of doctors, so I did not have to look far for inspiration. I’m married to a pediatric cardiologist, also with duPont Hospital for Children, and I’m grateful for the opportunities I have every day to improve lives for kids and their families. As a father and surgeon, I have a soft spot for helping children in any way I can. It’s a privilege to be able to improve their lives even if there are challenges. I love to see kids getting back to enjoying life to its fullest and being able to help people deal with difficult issues. One of my proudest professional moments was the day I walked into the operating room and had the privilege to start surgically caring for children. I’m still passionate about my work and the opportunities I have every day to improve the lives of kids, one child at a time. The children I treat have serious medical problems, and it takes a whole team of professionals, working in lots of related medical and sociological fields, to make a difference in their lives, and the lives of their families. It’s an honor to be part of that team. At the end of the day, it’s all about the kids. I’m a proud father of two with two on the way. Being a dad has opened a new door in my life — it’s helped me realize even more how special children are and what family means. I enjoy spending time with family, doing anything outdoors and watching sports. I’m originally from the Bronx, but grew up in Florida and am a lifelong Florida Gators fan. When I was in high school, my older sister was diagnosed with a rare form of pediatric cancer. It required her to get specialized treatment. She at the time was 18 and was looked up to by all the other pediatric patients as a role model, and sometimes even as a babysitter. Her impact on those kids made me want to do something for kids, too. I’m passionate about making sure that children can still experience life as children regardless of their circumstances, location or sickness. I think it’s important to help kids maintain a sense of innocence and fun throughout the process of something as serious as open-heart surgery. I try to make a difference by actively listening to patients and families, offering continued support, having a willingness to research new therapies, and providing seamless communication with primary care providers. I think it’s very important to provide constant feedback and communication for families and involve them in decision-making. I’m pretty even-keeled. Because I wanted a profession I could have a lifelong passion for, and felt drawn since childhood toward medicine, I chose pediatric surgery. It’s fulfilling on a daily basis – not just the actual surgery, but also the opportunities to communicate with patients and families and establish bonds with them. For me, pediatric surgery is the most rewarding of all fields – for many reasons. Children are innocent, resilient, and fun to take care of. The kids I see are afflicted by an accident or bad luck, and it’s great to have a positive impact on them and their families. I feel strongly about spending time with parents – after all, they’re entrusting their child’s care to me and my team. It’s a privilege and a responsibility to establish a bond with them. I take this aspect of my work very seriously. I’m also passionate about doing the right thing, being a good family person, raising my kids to be wholesome children who grow up to be good, happy people. Recently I tied with another physician for the highest patient satisfaction score at Nemours. It’s not the kind of award you actively try to win – I didn’t even know I was competing at all – but it’s something I take pride in. It was a welcome surprise, and it’s satisfying to think I’ve made a positive impact on children and their families. I believe that children are uniquely deserving of our best care because they are innocent, vulnerable and often unaware or not fully aware of their disease. Being a sick kid can be terrifying, and I want to be there to help in some way. I also greatly appreciate and enjoy how often children can recover from seemingly insurmountable disease. Far from making me sad to see illness in a child, it makes me hopeful to think about his/her potential for health and wellness and to enjoy a full life after receiving appropriate treatment. I am driven by a sense of justice, and that the children we serve deserve our best. I care deeply that we provide care in the most up to date, efficient, honest and accurate way possible. I am a first-generation daughter of a Holocaust survivor, and grew up in central New Jersey with two brothers — one has cerebral palsy. I’ve always been interested in science and education, and, with my mother as a role model, I am a strong advocate for inclusion, disability, and other issues. I relate well with kids in general and especially those who have disabilities. As a pediatric rehabilitation physician, I like to guide children’s recovery and rehab, help patients and their families set realistic expectations, and get them through the experience with all the information they’ll need. I’m a powerful advocate for the disabled, inspired by my mother’s steadfast commitment to help my brother succeed in his own life. I’m passionate about giving parents those same tools, educating children and families dealing with disabilities and injuries about the process of recovery. So they can be prepared. It’s important to give injured children and their families as much guidance and deep honesty as possible, so they can go through the experience knowing what to expect. This approach improves follow-through and success, and it’s also how I train residents. Dr. Wade Shrader is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon, division chief of the Nemours Cerebral Palsy Center, and is on the board of directors, American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine. He’s also been an invited lecturer, active researcher, and a reviewer, editor and contributor of medical journals and book chapters. I think children represent the center of hope in our families. I became a pediatric doctor to help nurture that hope in each family so that each child we care for can reach their absolute best potential. I love the engineering aspects of orthopedics. Doing orthopedics in children just seemed like the perfect fit for me. After my two sons were diagnosed with their cerebral palsy (CP), the first time I took care of a family of a child with CP, I knew that this was my purpose in life: to try to help families like mine. I am passionate about being an advocate for improved health care and improved access to society for children and adults with disabilities. I truly try to treat each child and each family how I want my children and my family treated. As a special needs parent myself, I like to let my patients’ families know that, so that I can help in some small way by saying “I know what you’re going through, and I’m going to do everything in my power to help you.”. Dr. Shrader is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Mucopolysaccharidosis Type 4A (MPS IVA, Morquio Syndrome Type A). Dr. Vandna Passi is a pediatric pulmonologist at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. She's an author of peer-reviewed medical journal articles, an invited presenter and an active researcher. I always wanted to work with children, and knew I wanted to be a pediatrician since I finished college. Then, in medical school, I spent a lot of my fourth year in pediatric subspecialties. Now, I get a lot of satisfaction seeing my patients over the long term — I can see their progress and development, and watch them as they grow. Children are such fun to work with and it can be simpler to approach their health issues than with adults. It's very fulfilling. One reason I chose pediatric pulmonology was because I liked the mix of being able to see and help children on an outpatient basis (helping kids on well and sick visits in our clinic) and also provide inpatient care to children who are acutely sick and admitted to the hospital. In my residency, I saw a lot of inner-city children. Many became seriously ill simply because their asthma wasn't being cared for, they hadn't been diagnosed properly, or they (and their families) hadn't been properly educated on how to manage their care. This was way more common than it should have been. I knew I wanted to help these kids, as well as all those who had other pulmonology issues, too. I'm passionate about working with patients and families to educate them on the conditions they’re dealing with, and how to prevent serious episodes and achieve the best possible quality of life. I'm also passionate about our hospital and staff continually setting best practices for treating children with pulmonology conditions and following those procedures routinely. I'm especially interested in these procedures being followed in our intensive care unit (ICU), as well as in our neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and outpatient clinic. A big part of what I do is educate families on what they need to know regarding their child's condition and health, including proper medication and care. I can't be with their child at all times, so it's really about empowering each family to help their child's quality of life. In children with asthma, for instance, I feel they should never be limited. Together with their family, I want to help them do whatever they want to do in life. Dr. Passi is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Mucopolysaccharidosis Type 4A (MPS IVA, Morquio Syndrome Type A). She is also highly rated in 18 other conditions, according to our data. Her clinical expertise encompasses Subglottic Stenosis, Ellis-Van Creveld Syndrome, Thanatophoric Dysplasia, and Kozlowski Warren Fisher Syndrome. Dr. Passi is board certified in American Board Of Pediatrics.
