Philosophy of care | My philosophy is to treat others as I would like to be treated. I enjoy helping patients understand their medical problem in order to make an informed decision. | Also, I am a member of the breast cancer and genetic cancer multidisciplinary consultation teams. Together we review your diagnostic information and give you a written opinion reflecting the scope of your condition and recommendations for your best course of care. | Why I entered medicine | My uncle is an emergency medicine physician who inspired me to become a doctor and encouraged me through my training. To this day, I still seek his advice. I chose hematology oncology because I enjoy taking care of patients who are confronting serious health challenges. My mother had breast cancer and she was helped greatly by her physicians and a recently developed targeted therapy called Herceptin. I feel optimistic that the field is rapidly evolving due to scientific breakthroughs and will continue to do so throughout my career. I want to be a part of helping people during this exciting time. | Community involvement | I volunteered in a free clinic during my training. | Personal interests | I’m married and have two boys. I like to stay active. I teach my boys sports, go hiking or take my golden retriever, Charlie, for a walk. Dr. Lamparella is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Multiple Myeloma. His top areas of expertise are Paget Disease of the Breast, Breast Cancer, Inflammatory Breast Cancer, Tissue Biopsy, and Bone Marrow Aspiration.

Philosophy of care | Effective medical care begins with a deep understanding of each patient’s circumstances and needs. The physician-patient relationship is foundational and must be a two-way dialogue built on trust and respect. I prioritize learning what truly matters to you and your family. I offer treatment recommendations and options that align with your values, preferences and goals. While my clinical focus is on blood disorders and blood cancers, listening carefully and tailoring care to patients is the heart of everything I do. I provide guidance and recommendations, but the decisions ultimately belong to you, the patient. I strongly believe in a team-based approach, where collaboration and communication yield the best outcomes. | Why I entered medicine | When I started college, medicine was the farthest thing from my mind; I was an economics major and took the MCAT on a whim. To my surprise, I scored far better than expected for someone without a science background, and that led me to medical school. Looking back, I can’t imagine doing anything else. Medicine – and caring for patients – has become my true passion. My path into the field was unconventional but led me exactly where I was meant to be. Practicing hematology and oncology isn’t just a career for me – it’s the only thing I can see myself doing. | Community involvement | As a part of cancer center leadership, I participate in local events and charities for patients with cancer and blood diseases, including speaking to the leukemia/lymphoma society. I am particularly fond of events centered around running for cancer charities. | Personal interests | Running is a personal passion of mine – second only to medicine and my family. Dr. Lash is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Multiple Myeloma. His top areas of expertise are Lung Cancer, Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC), Pleuropulmonary Blastoma, Large-Cell Immunoblastic Lymphoma, and Bone Marrow Aspiration.

Philosophy of care | Listening is important. That's the most helpful to patients. You get the most insight into their personality. Communication is also important -- not only with the patient, but with the patient's family, and especially in the hospital or nursing home. Good communication goes a long way. I've been doing this for more than 10 years, and you build a relationship with your patients. I like to catch up, see how they're doing, ask about their family, vacations. | Why I entered medicine | My father was a doctor, and that had an impact on me when I was growing up. | Personal interests | My greatest passion in life is my family -- my wife and my two daughters. That's the most important thing to me. I spend a lot of time with the family, and I like to fish. We're big Eagles fans, and I have season tickets. Philosophy of care | In my area we’re dealing with people who are frightened. I’m trying to help patients deal with all of the information they’ve been hearing, and I’m trying to dispel all of the myths. It’s a matter of education and mutual trust. I’m there to do whatever I can do for them, even if it’s just a matter of easing their pain. | Also, I am a member of the thoracic cancer multidisciplinary consultation team. Together we review your diagnostic information and give you a written opinion reflecting the scope of your condition and recommendations for your best course of care. | Why I entered medicine | Medicine was not my first choice. I wanted to be first oboe in the New York Philharmonic. I have a love of biochemistry and science, and I like people. One day, I just decided I wanted to be a doctor. I wouldn’t change it for anything in the world. | Community involvement | I’m part of the National Cancer Institute’s community cancer program. Our goal is to be able to give the same care and treatment to everyone, whether they have health insurance or not. | Personal interests | I still play the oboe and will always have a love of music. Philosophy of care | I believe in involving patients in every step of their journey, specifically by incorporating your beliefs and viewpoints into the treatment plan for personalized and compatible care. Cancer treatment is rapidly advancing and the personalized care now extends to understanding each patient's unique tumor biology with the goal of targeted therapy. I see the field only getting more exciting as we discover new diagnostic and therapeutic means for achieving unprecedented results and improving quality of life. | Why I entered medicine | One thing that drew me to oncology was the level of depth at which the doctor-patient relationship functioned. I have always appreciated the enormous responsibility we as physicians have to our patients and their loved ones with regards to transparency and evidence-based care and this is paramount when treating someone with cancer or a blood disorder. | Community involvement | As a medical student, I participated in a medical service trip to the Himalayas in Northern India where we camped at various sites to establish tent clinics as a means of providing care to local people who otherwise would not have had access. Medical aid abroad has always been a passion of mine and in the future, I would very much like the opportunity to participate in similar programs to provide oncologic care and preventative services in developing nations as well as on the home front. | Personal interests | I enjoy traveling with my family. I am of Italian origin and enjoy visiting Italy to tour historical sites, try different local dishes, and spend time with family and friends. I love running for multiple reasons and lately have participated in the Philadelphia Half Marathon for the past few years and train by trail running with my four-legged companions. "Philosophy of care | I believe you should be treated with respect and as an individual – oncology is not a ""one-size-fits-all"" subspecialty. For me, it's important to know not only your past medical history, but also your expectations and preferences. My goal is for you and your loved ones to leave each of our visits with a clear diagnosis and treatment plan. Family provides much-needed support during difficult times. | Why I entered medicine | My interest in medicine started as a pharmacy technician in high school and college. I loved interacting with patients and learning about medications and diseases. Then my grandfather became ill, and I saw firsthand how difficult it was to have a loved one going through medical treatments. It inspired me to become a physician and one day guide patients through our health system. My interest in oncology started with my heavy involvement in THON, a Penn State dance marathon that raises millions for pediatric cancer. I became close to many families involved with treatment and witnessed both their positive outcomes and difficult challenges. I find the science of cancer and its treatments fascinating, especially as we move toward more personalized and targeted therapies. | Personal interests | When not working I enjoy time with my husband and our children. We love exploring new sites within the Lehigh Valley and traveling to new places around the world. I also enjoy riding my bike or walking/running the many beautiful local trails.". Philosophy of care | I will treat you as I would like to be treated in your place, and strongly believe in providing individualized care. A physician should clearly explain each patient's condition and the pros and cons of available options at the time of diagnosis and at each step along the way. Equally important is listening to patients to learn what is important to them and their concerns. | Why I entered medicine | I chose oncology because I enjoy helping patients deal with and get through one of the most difficult periods of their lives. | Community involvement | I support the Conquer Cancer Foundation. | Personal interests | I enjoy spending time with my family and watching European soccer. Philosophy of care | Finding out you have cancer is life altering for both you and your loved ones. There is a lot of misinformation out there, especially in today’s social media environment, and that can cause more harm than the initial news of your diagnosis. My goal is to provide information to help you make the right decisions during these trying times. Medicine is indeed a shared decision process with the physician and the patient (along with the family). I hope to provide relevant information to help you navigate your diagnosis and treatment plans and provide optimal support for you and your family. | Why I entered medicine | Medicine was the only career choice for me. I can’t see myself doing anything else or practicing any other field of medicine. Before age 10, I was heavily involved in helping my mother design her clinical practice. In my teenage years, I spent a lot of time in several hospitals in the city volunteering in various departments to get more exposure. In my undergraduate training, I spent time in a cancer lab that focused on drug design. Naturally, the next step was medical school. | Community involvement | Health care is a basic human necessity. I helped to staff a volunteer clinic in medical school with fellow medical students and helped with fundraising for the clinic. We saw patients free of charge and had gift cards for those who needed help with the cost of their medications. We were also able to assist the patients with nutrition, since the clinic was part of a food bank. I hope to start or participate in a similar clinic here someday. | Personal interests | Outside of medicine my biggest interest is in cosmology – the origins of the universe. We live in such a vast universe that spans such a grand period of time; one can only imagine what lies outside our own solar system. I've had the privilege to travel to remote sites around the country and use large dome telescopes to gaze at distant stars. | My family and I love to travel. Each year we try a different area to soak up its beauty and culture, although we do have favorites. Dr. Nadeem is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Multiple Myeloma. His top areas of expertise are Familial Colorectal Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Familial Pancreatic Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer, and Bone Marrow Aspiration.

What is the definition of Multiple Myeloma?

Multiple myeloma is a rare cancer that occurs in bone marrow (soft tissue inside bones) in white blood cells called plasma cells that usually produce antibodies (immunoglobulins) which help the body to fight infection. However, in multiple myeloma the plasma cells become cancerous, producing a protein known by several names, including monoclonal immunoglobulin, monoclonal protein (M-protein), M-spike, or paraprotein. The cancerous plasma cells fill up the bone marrow, eventually spreading to the outside of the bones and weakening them, causing bone fractures. The cancerous plasma cells additionally begin producing high levels of an antibody (immunoglobulin) that increases the viscosity (thickness) of the blood, leading to clotting, which can further cause kidney damage. While levels of one antibody increase, others drop, increasing the risk of infections. Red blood cell counts also drop, causing anemia, while blood calcium levels increase, leading to dehydration, constipation, and confusion.   Types of multiple myeloma include smoldering myeloma, which usually occurs without symptoms, and plasmacytoma, which is marked by abnormal plasma cells that occur in only one bone, causing pain. Multiple myeloma mainly occurs in older people over the age of 60, males, African Americans, people who are obese, and those with a family history of multiple myeloma, or who have been diagnosed with a condition known as monoclonal gammopathy of uncertain significance (MGUS; see more about this condition below.)

What type of doctors treat multiple myeloma?

Multiple myeloma is managed by a team of specialists who bring different areas of expertise to provide comprehensive care:

      • Hematologists are blood and bone experts who often lead multiple myeloma treatment, focusing on how the disease affects blood and bone marrow.
      • Oncologists are cancer specialists who manage chemotherapy and other treatments aimed at controlling multiple myeloma.
      • Radiologists conduct imaging tests to monitor the disease and assess any spread or bone involvement.
      • Orthopedic surgeons are sometimes consulted to address bone damage and fractures caused by multiple myeloma.

      How does multiple myeloma progress?

Multiple myeloma typically progresses through stages, starting with the early “smoldering” phase, where symptoms are mild or not present. Over time, the disease may progress to active multiple myeloma, where symptoms like bone pain, fatigue, and frequent infections appear. As the disease advances, it affects more areas in the body, causing further damage to bones and organs. Treatment can slow progression, but multiple myeloma is generally considered a chronic condition, requiring ongoing care and monitoring.

      How is multiple myeloma treated?

Treatment usually involves a combination of therapies tailored to the individual based on age, health, and stage of multiple myeloma.

      • Chemotherapy uses drugs to target and kill cancer cells, helping to control the disease.
      • Immunotherapy strengthens the immune system’s ability to fight the cancer, using medications that target myeloma cells.
      • Stem Cell Transplant restores healthy blood cells by replacing damaged bone marrow, often following high-dose chemotherapy.
      • Radiation Therapy targets specific bone lesions to reduce pain and prevent fractures.

What is the life expectancy of someone with multiple myeloma?

Survival rates for multiple myeloma can vary widely based on factors like age, overall health, what stage the multiple myeloma is in, and how well the cancer responds to treatment. When diagnosed during the early stages, the prognosis is generally more favorable. Thanks to advances in treatments, many people live several years after diagnosis. New therapies are constantly improving outcomes, offering hope for longer survival and a better quality of life.

When should I see a Multiple Myeloma doctor near Allentown, PA?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Multiple Myeloma doctor near Allentown, PA?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Multiple Myeloma doctors near Allentown, PA?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Multiple Myeloma doctors near Allentown, PA?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Multiple Myeloma doctor near Allentown, PA?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Multiple Myeloma doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Multiple Myeloma doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Multiple Myeloma doctor near Allentown, PA?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Multiple Myeloma doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Multiple Myeloma doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Multiple Myeloma doctors near Allentown, PA?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Multiple Myeloma doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Multiple Myeloma doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Multiple Myeloma doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
