Surgery and management of patients with cancer is very complex and challenging. I enjoy working at Duke because of the breadth and quality of people we have here. I really feel like I’m working with the best when I’m working with my colleagues. I went into obstetrics and gynecology, because I enjoyed working with women patients. Then as a resident, I found that oncology patients were among the most gratifying to take care of because they appreciate so much everything you try to do for them. In high school and college, I was very interested in science and mathematics, and the human body and physiology. In college, meeting different types of people, I realized that I wanted a profession that gave me the opportunity to interact with all different kinds of people. My wife and I moved here 25 years ago and have never regretted it. It’s a great area to live. Dr. Berchuck is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Neonatal Ovarian Cyst. His top areas of expertise are Ovarian Cancer, Endometrial Cancer, Ovarian Carcinosarcoma, Tubal Ligation, and Oophorectomy.

I am a gynecologic oncologist at Duke. I see women who have ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, cervical cancer, and vulvar cancer. I also see women with precancerous conditions of the gynecologic organs, which includes cervical dysplasia, vaginal dysplasia, and masses of the ovary that may or may not be cancer. I am fairly direct and let people know what they are dealing with up front. On the other hand, I try to keep everything positive. At this point in my career, I’ve had a lot of experience and will let patients know that while there’s a full range of outcomes that could happen, I have seen a lot of positive examples based on their condition. If I had cancer or a family member of mine had cancer, I would absolutely want them to come to Duke. It’s not just the standard treatments that we offer here, but also the attention to detail and access to world-class clinical trials. Dr. Havrilesky is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Neonatal Ovarian Cyst. Her top areas of expertise are Endometrial Cancer, Ovarian Cancer, Sertoli-Leydig Cell Tumor, Hysterectomy, and Oophorectomy.

My practice and research focuses on patients who have female-specific cancers, such as ovarian, endometrial, cervical, vulvar or vaginal cancer. I offer my patients access to variety of treatments, ranging from surgery to chemotherapy and radiation. My dad was a physician, and my mom was a nurse, so I was exposed to health care at an early age. I enjoy my work on female cancers, because it is one of the few subspecialties to blend surgery and chemotherapy. It also gives me the chance to develop strong relationships with my patients, since I get to take care of my patients before and during their surgery, as well as continue to see them for the rest of their lifetime. I’ve found those patients, who have been able to face their diagnosis with unwavering optimism, to be incredibly inspiring. I have three children, so outside of work I spend as much time as I can with my family. Dr. Alvarez is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Neonatal Ovarian Cyst. Women’s imaging is a technical and emotional subspecialty of radiology, and it is essential to have passionate, empathic and proactive physicians guiding patients through these deeply personal medical experiences. Watching my two aunts simultaneously battle breast cancer contributed to my passion for women's health, which I have been actively pursuing since the beginning of my training. I am approachable and compassionate, which allows me to bring a level of comfort and ease to interactions with my patients. I have come to recognize that it is of equal importance to make the correct diagnosis in the reading room as it is to be able to communicate the findings with patience and empathy. Having witnessed the diagnosis of breast cancer from both the patient and physician standpoint, I know the importance of the humanistic as well as scientific attributes of women’s imaging. Growing up, I always had an interest in science. Early on, I actually considered becoming a veterinarian because I love animals. However, after having more experience in the veterinary field as well as in medicine, I was drawn to taking care of people. Women’s health provides a unique opportunity in medicine to interact with patients throughout different stages of their life. Obstetrics reflects a particularly exciting time in most women’s lives, and it is an honor to be able to participate in that experience. Duke has several benefits. One is immediate access to top tier clinicians in a variety of subspecialties. Another is that everyone holds themselves to a high personal standard; I’m proud to be a part of that type of work culture. I spend most of my time outside of work with my family, which includes my husband, twin daughters, a cat, and two dogs. I also love to eat, and I enjoy exploring the excellent restaurants throughout the Triangle. Dr. Bolac is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Neonatal Ovarian Cyst. I enjoy getting to know patients when they first come in, maybe for contraception, then when they’re thinking about starting a family, and then seeing them through their pregnancy and hopefully being able to deliver their baby. For any patient coming in for an obstetrics or gynecology visit, the first time they have that exam can be very intimidating. My goal is to make people as comfortable as possible, especially for those seeing me for the first time -- making them feel comfortable about asking questions. There’s no such thing as a dumb question. The dumb question is the one you don’t ask. At our practice, we all communicate with each other about being consistent in the way that we provide care. We’re all on the same page of our goal of doing the right thing and best thing for the patient. Dr. Highley is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Neonatal Ovarian Cyst. I went into medicine with a desire to care for people throughout their lifetime. Obstetrics and gynecology enables me to do that and so much more. Getting to know my patients is a priority to me. My clinical interests include general obstetrics, gynecologic surgery with a focus on minimally invasive techniques, benign gynecologic disorders, family planning, LGBTQ+ health, and contraception. Some of my other interests include education and advocacy. I enjoy being involved with an academic medical center because it allows me to stay up to date on current medical knowledge and practice. I have been to numerous local, state, and national conferences advocating for health care. As an open member of the LGTBQ+ community, I strive to provide the most inclusive care possible for all persons seeking care with me. I am originally from Louisiana and moved to North Carolina for residency in 2013. I decided at a very young age that I wanted to become an obstetrician. I was 7 when I watched my own mother go through pregnancy and became fascinated with pregnancy and birth. I started telling everyone “I’m going to deliver babies when I grow up.” As I went through medical school, my draw to the specialty confirmed what I'd felt from a very young age. One of the many reasons I love working at Duke is we are always well-equipped to deal with any emergencies which can arise unexpectedly. While most deliveries do not require any interventions, I am happy we can offer anything needed on a moment’s notice. In addition to taking care of pregnant patients, I enjoy taking care of adolescent women who are transitioning into adulthood. I also enjoy caring for perimenopausal patients and menopausal patients. I am happy to offer in office procedures, such as essure tubal ligation, which is a great option for women whom have completed childbearing. In addition, I enjoy surgical procedures in the operating room when surgery is required to treat an issue that cannot be managed with medication. Dr. Kerner is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Neonatal Ovarian Cyst. When should I see a Neonatal Ovarian Cyst doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Neonatal Ovarian Cyst doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Neonatal Ovarian Cyst doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Neonatal Ovarian Cyst doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Neonatal Ovarian Cyst doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Neonatal Ovarian Cyst doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Neonatal Ovarian Cyst doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Neonatal Ovarian Cyst doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Neonatal Ovarian Cyst doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Neonatal Ovarian Cyst doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.
