Duke Neurological Disorders Clinic - Clinic 1L
I was drawn to neurosurgery during medical school when I first witnessed the unusually direct and positive impacts it could make for patients. At Duke Health, I now provide surgical treatments to people affected by epilepsy, Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, and dystonia. My background as a surgeon certainly shapes my interactions with my patients, yet I identify them and also myself more as somebody's sibling, friend, neighbor, and daughter or son. I strive to emphasize our shared perspectives because I believe they lead to the foundations of good care: empathy, respect, clear communication, and a strong focus on patient well-being and safety. I see patients with mitochondrial and lysosomal storage diseases, developmental delay, intellectual disability, chromosomal disorders, congenital defects, short stature, failure to thrive, and adult genetic disorders. I love the application of rapidly growing genetic knowledge to treat patients with a variety of medical problems that involve a complex interaction of genetic and environmental factors, particularly since the Human Genome Project. I find it fascinating to use the massive power of sequencing technology and artificial intelligence/machine learning to predict phenotypes from genotypes with increasing clinical relevance to human health. In my spare time, I like to hike and play sports with my wife and teenage sons, play piano, and learn famous Russian poetry of the 19th century. I see patients in person and through telehealth. Duke Cancer Center
I became an orthopaedic surgeon because I enjoy the mechanical nature of how joints, bones and muscles work together. I chose to focus on treating children because it provides me with an opportunity to make a difference in their health now, and for the rest of their lives. As I’ve entered the later stages of my career, I have had the privilege of seeing patients who I treated come back to me as adults seeking treatment for their own children. I find it very fulfilling to see how the treatments I gave the parent helped them become a healthy, fully functional adult. I believe that being a good doctor means treating the “whole” patient, rather than focusing only on individual parts of the body. I enjoy working with my patients to make sure they are getting all the treatments they need to get and stay well. In my spare time I enjoy photography, hiking and backpacking. Duke Cancer Center Brain Tumor Clinic
What we specialize in at The Preston Robert Tisch Brain Tumor Center is compassionate care – we take care of our patients. It’s complete care. The patients don’t have to go out and find a radiologist. We have the radiation oncologist, the chemotherapy, the surgery, the radiology, we have all kinds of nursing people as well as help getting physical therapy and getting in-the-home assistance. Patients also can expect cutting-edge care because we run such a terrific science program here. I really like working with the patients. No question about it. It’s not that I’m doing some trivial procedure six times a day. When someone comes in with a brain tumor, there’s usually some bonding, and instead of running away from that, I really enjoy it. Duke Cancer Center
I'm a radiation oncologist, and I specialize in treating brain, base of skull and spine tumors, as well as tumors that arise in the body but go to the brain or the spine, as in certain cases of lung, breast and kidney cancer and melanoma. When I meet with a patient, it’s important for me to introduce them and their family to our team of doctors, therapists, nurses and treatment planners. The patient and their family will also become members of this team – truly the most important part - so we can work together to tailor care based on their wants and needs. At Duke, we’ve developed techniques to precisely and accurately treat small, complex lesions and tumors. We can minimize the amount of radiation that goes into normal tissues and at the same time maximize the amount of radiation where it is needed. Our team is geared to delivering every treatment to each patient exactly as planned, especially in complicated and difficult situations. As a patient or a physician, I think there’s no better place to be than Duke. I love my work, feel honored that my patients place their trust in our team and me and work hard to earn that trust. I am a neurologist and cancer doctor who treats brain tumors and researches ways to improve quality of life for brain tumor patients. As a college student, I thought I was going to be a scientist, but fell in love with studying the brain and its inner workings. I enjoy being at Duke, because I work with some of the top clinicians and researchers in the field, and a generous and warm-hearted staff that helps patients and their loved ones through treatment. It is hard to pick one thing I enjoy about my job. I enjoy seeing patients and their loved ones, being at the cutting edge of research and teaching the next generation of doctors. Duke Cancer Center
As an orthopedic oncologist, I treat cancers of the bone and muscle. My background is very different from most doctors. I started as a veterinarian and became interested in cancer because so many dogs have cancer, and I came to medical school to learn how to treat and beat some of these types of cancer. I’m still a veterinarian, and that’s a big part of what we do here. Many cancers of the bone and muscles, called sarcomas, are rare in people, but common in dogs. So continuing to treat dogs with this type of cancer lets us and our group gain a deeper understanding of how these cancers work. With my patients, I try to find out what the cancer has taken from them, and what their goals are for how to get back in control. For some, their goal is to beat the cancer no matter what. For others, the goal is to keep walking or to be able to walk again, or to be in less pain. Then we try to tailor our approach to the patient. Often, people think being a surgical oncologist must be a terrible job. But I find something in each patient to admire, because patients dealing with cancer develop a strength the rest of us don’t get to have. Duke Children's Health Center Neurosurgery Clinic
Duke Children’s offers the full spectrum of services for children, and pediatric neurosurgery is very strong here. I have an excellent group of people working with me, and we really strive to take excellent care of these children and their families. We work hard to build up a trust, because this is a very stressful and strained time in people’s lives when their children are ill. We work to build that trust and to maintain it on a daily basis. The whole team works together for the good of the child and the family. My favorite part of my job is seeing children who came in with a very serious health issue – and after getting them through the surgery and recovery – when they come back to clinic and we see that they have returned to their normal lives, that they’re doing better, that they’re enjoying all the things kids should be enjoying and really getting on with their lives. It’s really rewarding to think I played a role in that child going on to have a healthy and productive life. Hearing and balance are among the most fundamental ways people interact with the world. As an ENT doctor, otologist, and neurotologist, I am very fortunate to work in a profession that allows me to help patients having problems with these most basic functions. Every patient I work with presents a unique and challenging problem that needs a creative solution. Whether is it surgery to remove a complex tumor at the base of the skull, placing a cochlear implant to restore hearing to the deaf, or diagnosing a complex balance problem, I am motivated to work with my patients to come up with a custom solution to their personal problem. The large majority of my patients are children with/or at risk for neurologic disease or adults with developmental delay. I like to try to avoid invasive testing and procedures or testing that requires anesthesia or sedation when possible. In my pediatric clinic, I like to collect and use old fashioned mechanical toys to test eye movements, which younger children usually enjoy. Duke Pain Medicine Clinic
What I have learned after over a decade of working in pain management is that there are no two people with the same symptoms. All of the patients I see have a unique story and background that lead them to seek care in pain management. Knowing this, I listen to their concerns and try to develop an individualized treatment plan based on the type of pain they are experiencing. Ultimately, our shared goal is to help patients reduce their pain and improve function, allowing for a better quality of daily life. This often involves a multimodal approach that may include physical therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, medications, and interventional procedures.
