Dr. Malvika Sharma

I am passionate about sleep and helping patients achieve good sleep so they can be healthier and feel better during the day. I have particular interests in treating patients with obstructive and central sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, and idiopathic hypersomnia. For patients with sleep apnea who haven't done well with treatment in the past, I can often help make positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy more tolerable and effective. My approach to patients is to spend time gathering information from patients and their families. Families can provide very helpful information about patients' sleep that patients might not be aware of themselves. I then work with patients to develop a treatment that is mutually agreeable, as I think it's important for patients to understand and agree with their treatment plans. I am currently the chief of the division of Epilepsy, Sleep, and Clinical Neurophysiology. I see epilepsy patients and patients with sleep disorders. The epilepsy patients that I see often have a hard time controlling their seizures or have other epilepsy-related problems. At Duke, we have many options, including clinical trials, advanced medications, and surgical options, that we can offer patients to get them to a better quality of life with fewer or no seizures. In sleep disorders, I see many patients with sleep apnea and have a passion for treating individuals with narcolepsy. My philosophy is that I want patients to be aware of all the different treatment options that they have available this them. Together, we come up with what I, the patient, and the family think is the best approach for the individual. This way, we can individualize the treatment for each person. It is very gratifying for me to see patients doing so much better with the appropriate medications and pursuing the dreams they have and doing the things they really want to do.
