I am an ophthalmologist specializing in both pediatric and neuro-ophthalmology. My expertise is in the diagnosis and treatment of various types of neurological conditions affecting the eyes of both adults and children. My clinical interests include pediatric and adult nystagmus, strabismus, brain tumors, autoimmune demyelinating diseases, spina bifida, craniosynostoses, hydrocephalus, neonatal hypoxic ischemic injury, spina bifida, cortical visual impairment, papilledema, idiopathic intracranial hypertension (pseudotumor cerebri) and all optic neuropathies. The large majority of my patients are children with/or at risk for neurologic disease or adults with developmental delay. My clinic visits often include ancillary testing such as visual fields and optical coherence tomography, which help me assess if there is a risk for vision loss. I like to try to avoid invasive testing and procedures or testing that requires anesthesia or sedation when possible. In my pediatric clinic, I like to collect and use old fashioned mechanical toys to test eye movements, which younger children usually enjoy. I will often have small prizes for younger (and older) children at the end of the visit. Dr. El is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in the treatment of Optic Nerve Atrophy. I was born and raised right here in Durham, NC. After attending college at Duke, I ventured north to Boston, where I completed most of my medical training, and was fortunate to meet and marry the love of my life, my husband Neil (also on faculty as a cardiologist here at Duke). I returned to Durham for my Glaucoma fellowship, briefly joined the faculty “across the street” at UNC-Chapel Hill, and then returned “home” to Duke Eye Center in 1995, where I have been on the faculty ever since. Dual fellowship-trained in both Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus as well as in Glaucoma, I have a clinical and research focus on pediatric glaucoma and cataracts, as well as retinopathy of prematurity, but enjoy providing care for myriad pediatric problems of the eyes, including treatment of “grown children” with ocular alignment issues. My modus operandi is very simple – I simply try hard to treat each and every patient the way I would like someone to treat me. It works every time, and I am privileged to be a clinician and educator at Duke Eye Center and in Duke University Health System. Dr. Freedman is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Optic Nerve Atrophy. Her top areas of expertise are Retinopathy of Prematurity, Strabismus, Brown Syndrome, Trabeculectomy, and Cataract Removal.

As a neuro-ophthalmology specialist, I am dedicated to providing high level care to patients suffering from conditions that affect neural pathways connecting the eyes and the brain, such as vision-threatening disorders of the optic nerve and double vision arising from diseases of cranial nerves or the orbit. Making a diagnosis often depends on piecing together clues from a thorough eye exam, ocular imaging studies performed in clinic, and neuro-imaging studies performed by Radiology. I enjoy the challenge of this specialty and providing individualized and multidisciplinary treatment strategies for my patients. In addition to my clinical work, I am involved in basic science research and clinical trials related to optic nerve disease, and I am passionate about translating new findings in the laboratory into ways to improve patient care. Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family, hiking, and following Duke basketball. Dr. Gospe is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Optic Nerve Atrophy. His top areas of expertise are Tolosa Hunt Syndrome, Strabismus, Brown Syndrome, and Optic Nerve Atrophy.

I specialize in the medical and surgical management of cataracts and glaucoma. In my clinic, we utilize the latest imaging techniques to detect glaucoma and track any possible progression so we can treat the disease before it adversely affects quality of life. My goal is to provide individualized care, tailoring my approach to each patient, to treat their eye disease effectively. This partnership involves taking time to educate patients on the anatomy and pathology involved with their visual symptoms, and then making decisions together about potential treatment options based on the best available research and evidence. As glaucoma is a chronic disease, I value building long-lasting relationships with my patients. I also enjoy educating trainees at the Duke Eye Center. Outside work, I enjoy time with family, traveling, and playing tennis. I’m honored to have the opportunity to help people with their eye diseases. I look forward to meeting you. Dr. Quist is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Optic Nerve Atrophy. What is the definition of Optic Nerve Atrophy?

Methylmalonic acidemia is a condition in which the body cannot break down certain proteins and fats. The result is a buildup of a substance called methylmalonic acid in the blood. This condition is passed down through families.

It is one of several conditions called an "inborn error of metabolism."

When should I see an Optic Nerve Atrophy doctor in North Carolina, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Optic Nerve Atrophy doctor in North Carolina, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Optic Nerve Atrophy doctors in North Carolina, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Optic Nerve Atrophy doctors in North Carolina, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Optic Nerve Atrophy doctor in North Carolina, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Optic Nerve Atrophy doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Optic Nerve Atrophy doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Optic Nerve Atrophy doctor in North Carolina, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Optic Nerve Atrophy doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Optic Nerve Atrophy doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Optic Nerve Atrophy doctors in North Carolina, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Optic Nerve Atrophy doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Optic Nerve Atrophy doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Optic Nerve Atrophy doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
