From my early days in medical school, I was taught to look at the whole person, meaning that I see each patient as more than just a collection of parts that may become injured or disease. This holistic approach taught me how to integrate the patient into the health care process as a partner. This basic foundation was expanded upon as I completed both my residence and fellowship at Duke. I like to think that in the years I have been practicing medicine, I have honored those words spoken by Dr. Still. As a board certified family physician, I have sought to promote wellness and wellbeing among my patients at all stages of their lives, through collaborative partnerships with them (and sometimes their caregivers) in what I believe is truly patient-centered care. Clinical Research
Clinical research consists of overseeing clinical studies of patients undergoing new treatments and therapies, and publishing articles in peer reviewed medical journals. For over 30 years, helping patients with metabolic bones diseases (osteoporosis and Paget’s disease of bone) and other disorders of mineral metabolism (vitamin D deficiency and hyperparathyroidism) has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career as a physician. I enjoy helping patients with complicated problems find ways to treat their disease. I have many patients that I have followed for 10 to 20 years, and I highly value the relationship we develop. We now have FDA-approved therapies to treat and prevent fractures in osteoporosis, and reduce pain and disability in Paget’s disease, so it is even more rewarding to help patients decide which treatments are best for them. My practice helps older adults and their families deal with problems that often come with aging. While my research focuses on preventing falls and broken bones in older adults, I also care for people with memory loss, depression, weight loss, side effects from medications, incontinence, pain, difficulty getting around, and loss of independence. My clinic uses a team approach that includes a social worker, geriatric nurse specialist and geropsychiatrist. Instead of focusing on one problem at a time, we try to think about the whole person, making sure to understand the patient's goals and preferences, and helping to prioritize plans when there are many problems going on at once. It is a joy and privilege to work with older adults, and I especially love hearing stories accumulated over a lifetime. At home, I am a proud mother of two teenage boys and an active volunteer in our Boy Scout troop, church and community.
