Overview

Dr. Kevin J. Mullins is the Chair of Neurosurgery at South Shore University Hospital and a board-certified neurosurgeon with over two decades of experience. Specializing in spinal and cranial disorders, Dr. Mullins provides comprehensive care for conditions affecting the brain, spine, and nervous system. He has performed more than 6,000 neurosurgical procedures, with expertise in both minimally invasive spine surgery and complex spinal reconstruction.

A graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, Dr. Mullins completed his residency in neurosurgery at the University of Rochester Medical Center. He further distinguished himself as a Clinical Associate Professor of Neurosurgery at Massachusetts General Hospital before transitioning to Long Island in 1998. Dr. Mullins has since played a pivotal role in expanding neurosurgical services at South Shore University Hospital, where he leads a multidisciplinary team dedicated to delivering exceptional patient care.

Dr. Mullins' clinical practice is deeply rooted in evidence-based medicine, emphasizing conservative, non-surgical treatment options whenever possible. He reserves surgery for patients who have exhausted all non-operative approaches, ensuring that each patient receives the most appropriate and personalized care. His clinical focus includes managing neck and back disorders, degenerative spine conditions, spinal deformities, and other complex spinal and cranial pathologies.

In 2017, Dr. Mullins founded SpineCare Long Island, which evolved into NeuroCare Long Island in 2023. NeuroCare Long Island joined Northwell Health in 2024, expanding access to top-tier neurosurgical care. Dr. Mullins continues to lead the practice with a commitment to compassionate, patient-centered care, using the latest advancements in neurosurgical techniques and technology to improve patient outcomes.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Mullins serves as an Associate Professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He is dedicated to training the next generation of neurosurgeons and advancing the field through education and research. His contributions to neurosurgery include numerous academic publications and presentations, and he remains actively involved in neurosurgical education and departmental leadership.

Dr. Mullins is highly respected by both his patients and colleagues for his surgical expertise and compassionate approach. Known for his dedication to patient care, he takes the time to explain diagnoses and treatment options clearly, ensuring that patients feel informed and supported throughout their medical journey.
