Chester V. Oddis, MD is a noted researcher in the clinical, epidemiological and serologic description of the idiopathic inflammatory myopathies. He has completed epidemiological studies on the incidence of polymyositis and dermatomyositis as well as longitudinal studies on functional disability in myositis patients. His focus has been in the autoantibody patterns in patients with inflammatory myopathy and their peculiar immunogenetic associations.Dr. Oddis has written extensively on the diagnosis and management of patients with myositis. He has published and lectured on the use of novel immunosuppressive agents such as tacrolimus (formerly FK506) in the treatment of patients with refractory myositis. This represents the only reported experience of this particular drug in the pharmacologic treatment of inflammatory myopathy. In collaboration with the Department of Neurology, he has assessed the efficacy and utility of outpatient needle muscle biopsy in the diagnosis of inflammatory myopathy. This is important given the cost-containment focus of the current health-care market.Dr. Oddis is the co-investigator on an important national NIH funded study on the efficacy of doxycycline in preventing the progression of knee osteoarthritis in middle-aged women. This study is the first of its kind in assessing the effect of a disease-modifying agent in osteoarthritis.Board certified in internal medicine and rheumatology, Dr. Oddis received his medical degree from Pennsylvania State University, Milton S. Hershey Medical Center and his undergraduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Penn State and fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Oddis is rated as an Elite provider by MediFind in the treatment of Polymyositis. His top areas of expertise are Dermatomyositis, Myositis, Polymyositis, and Antisynthetase Syndrome.

Philosophy of care | I strive to provide compassionate, quality, patient-centered care. I make sure to listen and fully understand each patient's needs and concerns regarding their condition and treatment, because doing so helps the patient establish and achieve treatment goals. I find great satisfaction in improving a patient's quality of life and getting them back (through effective disease management) to the activities they previously enjoyed. Rheumatic autoimmune conditions are often complex and chronic, so developing a long-term, trusting physician-patient relationship is paramount to treatment success. | Why I entered medicine | My interest in medicine was evident early in my life. My desire to become a physician peaked during my pharmacy education and continued as a practicing pharmacist; I realized I wanted to play a larger role in the overall care of patients. During my medical training, I became intrigued by the nature and complexities of various autoimmune rheumatic conditions. I decided to become a rheumatologist to help patients better understand and optimally manage their disease and live their best possible lives. | Personal interests | I enjoy cooking, traveling, sports and spending time with my family and friends. Dr. Delvecchio is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Polymyositis. His top areas of expertise are Postmenopausal Osteoporosis, Osteoporosis, Psoriasis, and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

Philosophy of care | My goal is to provide the highest level of professional care in a compassionate manner. To spend time with each patient listening closely to their concerns, providing explanation on often complex medical conditions, making treatment decisions together, and building long term relationships. | Why I entered medicine | Rheumatology captured my interest as an Internal Medicine resident. The ability to diagnose and treat often challenging autoimmune conditions, as well as additionally being able to treat other non-inflammatory musculoskeletal processes, continues to make my days interesting and enjoyable. | Community involvement | I have enjoyed my years being very active in youth sports programs. Particularly my coaching and administrative positions with youth basketball and baseball leagues. Now I enjoy watching those athletes I coached and my own children from the stands at high school sporting events. | Personal interests | I enjoy spending time with family and friends, such as taking trips with family and attending sporting events – especially at colleges our children attend. I enjoy running for exercise. Dr. Grady is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Polymyositis. His top areas of expertise are Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Osteoporosis, Postmenopausal Osteoporosis, and Psoriasis.

What is the definition of Polymyositis?

Polymyositis is a type of inflammatory myopathy, which refers to a group of muscle diseases characterized by chronic muscle inflammation and weakness. The muscles affected by Polymyositis are the skeletal muscles (those involved with making movements) on both sides of the body. The disease is more common among women and among black individuals. The exact cause of Polymyositis is unknown. The disease shares many characteristics with autoimmune disorders, which occur when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy body tissues. In some cases, the disease may be associated with viral infections, connective tissue disorders, or an increased risk for malignancies (cancer). Diagnosis is based on a clinical examination that may include laboratory tests, imaging studies, electromyography, and a muscle biopsy.

When should I see a Polymyositis doctor in Pennsylvania, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Polymyositis doctor in Pennsylvania, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Polymyositis doctors in Pennsylvania, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Polymyositis doctors in Pennsylvania, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Polymyositis doctor in Pennsylvania, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Polymyositis doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Polymyositis doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Polymyositis doctor in Pennsylvania, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Polymyositis doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Polymyositis doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Polymyositis doctors in Pennsylvania, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Polymyositis doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Polymyositis doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Polymyositis doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
