I am a specialist in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation-sometimes known as a physiatrist. My roots are in the Dakotas and my interest in this area of medicine evolved from my initial interest in being a family physician. My work involves helping the people I see regain as much independence as possible after an illness or injury such as brain injury, stroke, spinal cord injury, amputation, burn, orthopedic injuries, multiple sclerosis, and prolonged illness or multiple traumatic injuries. Much of my work involves working with other care providers including occupational, physical and speech therapists as well as nurses, psychologists and other physicians. I also have had a lifelong interest in working with adults with childhood onset disabilities including cerebral palsy and post polio syndrome. Away from work I enjoy, walking, reading, traveling, and spending time with my family. I have a special interest in global health issues and in particular enjoy spending time in Tanzania. "Growing up outside Anoka, coming from a family of teachers and farmers, being fairly well-rounded and loving the outdoors, I was always interested in rural medicine – it seemed like it'd be a good fit. This interest was piqued in medical school at the University of Minnesota, when I applied for a position in the Rural Physician Associate Program, a program whose mission is to entice young providers to pursue careers in rural primary care. I was accepted into the program and spent the majority of my third and fourth years of medical school ""apprenticing"" with some amazing family doctors out in Montevideo, Minnesota. This experience chiseled in granite my desire to be a country doctor. My medical school advisor, knowing of this goal, suggested I look into the University of Missouri's family medicine residency, as its mission was to train rural primary care doctors. I applied there, got in and fell in love with the department, the area and my wife, so saw no reason to leave. After completing residency and then a geriatrics fellowship, I was asked to join the faculty there and help run one of the department's teaching practices in a very small town in rural Missouri. I spent the next 30-plus years teaching and practicing full-spectrum, rural family medicine. Practicing in a rural area, anything can and does walk through the clinic doors. So, there's not much I haven't seen and very little I am surprised by. Many of the issues one deals with in a rural practice are not taught in medical school, so the ""art"" of medicine truly comes into play. My training and experience to date have taught me to work with all patient types, young and old, healthy and ill. And I enjoy them all. I've always viewed my role as that of an educator and a partner, working with patients and their families in order to accomplish their own personal health care goals. I don't force health care on anyone, but try to give people the information and guidance they need to make good health choices. To this end, I try to stay current on medical science and research in order to deliver evidence-based guidance. Simply, my philosophy of care is driven by the tenets of family medicine.". I elected to go into physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) because I was interested in improving peoples' quality of life. I work with patients who have had significant physical impairments such as a stroke or traumatic brain injury as well as those who are dealing with acute and chronic pain. Although I have a diffuse practice, I specialize in the management of acute and chronic pain using a wide range of treatment modalities, medications, therapies and interventional procedures. My goal is always to decrease the pain and improve each person's overall well-being. I take time with all patients to properly diagnose their conditions then discuss treatment plans, carefully going over the pros and cons of each option to find the one that will be most beneficial. After treatment has begun, I follow up with each patient to make sure that the plan is working, and if it's not, then develop a new one. When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, walking, watching movies, following local sports teams and doing photography. I am a member of the following professional associations: * American Academy of Pain Medicine (AAPM) * American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) * International Spine Intervention Society (ISIS) * American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (AAPMR). What is the definition of Post Polio Syndrome?

Symptoms and severity vary among affected people and may include muscle weakness and a gradual decrease in the size of muscles (atrophy); muscle and joint pain; fatigue; difficulty with gait; respiratory problems; and/or swallowing problems. Only a polio survivor can develop PPS. While polio is a contagious disease, PPS is not.

When should I see a Post Polio Syndrome doctor near Mankato, MN?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Post Polio Syndrome doctor near Mankato, MN?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Post Polio Syndrome doctors near Mankato, MN?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Post Polio Syndrome doctors near Mankato, MN?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Post Polio Syndrome doctor near Mankato, MN?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Post Polio Syndrome doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Post Polio Syndrome doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Post Polio Syndrome doctor near Mankato, MN?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Post Polio Syndrome doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Post Polio Syndrome doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Post Polio Syndrome doctors near Mankato, MN?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Post Polio Syndrome doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Post Polio Syndrome doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Post Polio Syndrome doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
