After enlisting in 1989, he earned an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy, graduating in 1996. Since 2012, he has served at the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he has held leadership roles as Chief of Hand Surgery, Chief of Orthopedic Surgery, and Chief of Surgery for the 10th Medical Group. He has also been a dedicated team physician for Academy athletes. He is actively involved in research & education and is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Kobayashi was elected to serve on the Board of Specialties for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons as well as the Society of Military Orthopedic Surgeons for education.  He has been the team physician for the Air Force Academy sports programs and is currently a consultant for the Olympic Training Center.
