Overview
I became a neurologist as I found the brain to be the most complex and fascinating organ in the body. During my training, I developed interest in epilepsy and sleep disorders and completed additional training in both of these fields. I believe in providing individualized care to all my patients after listening to each unique situation and coming up with a treatment plan that works best for them.

With over 15 years of experience in the field of electroencephalography, epilepsy diagnosis, and the management of people with drug-resistant epilepsy, I serve as the Director of the Duke Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. My responsibilities also encompass overseeing the Analytical Neurophysiology Lab, which focuses on advancing the field of neurophysiology to more accurately localize epileptic foci in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, employing state-of-the art signal analysis techniques integrated with artificial intelligence. The ultimate aim of this endeavor is to optimize treatment efficacy through individually tailored approaches, thereby enhancing the quality of life in people with epilepsy. Central to my approach is the concerted effort to assemble a highly collaborative team to achieve the best possible outcome for each patient. To do so, I also strive to integrate the latest innovative developments in the field into patient care, ensuring the highest treatment standards in our field. Duke Neurology South Durham
I am passionate about sleep and helping patients achieve good sleep so they can be healthier and feel better during the day. I have particular interests in treating patients with obstructive and central sleep apnea, restless legs syndrome, narcolepsy, and idiopathic hypersomnia. For patients with sleep apnea who haven't done well with treatment in the past, I can often help make positive airway pressure (PAP) therapy more tolerable and effective. My approach to patients is to spend time gathering information from patients and their families. Families can provide very helpful information about patients' sleep that patients might not be aware of themselves. I then work with patients to develop a treatment that is mutually agreeable, as I think it's important for patients to understand and agree with their treatment plans. Whenever possible, I avoid using medications as most sleep problems can be improved without them. Dr. Spector is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Restless Legs Syndrome.
