Philosophy of care | Patients with chronic diseases need special care and attention. It's important for me to educate patients so they feel more in control of their disease and their lives. | Why I entered medicine | Rheumatology is a very challenging specialty for physicians as well as for patients. The diseases are complex and encompass every field of medicine. Growing up in my community I was always grateful for the care given to me and my family. As a result, I wanted to provide my community medical care they needed, particularly those with challenging rheumatic illnesses. | Community involvement | Growing up in the Lehigh Valley, I enjoy participating in events with the Arthritis Foundation and running local races with my father. | Personal interests | Spending time with my family and friends. I also enjoy running outdoors and exercise when time allows. Dr. O'brien is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Her top areas of expertise are Dermatomyositis, Juvenile Primary Osteoporosis, Scleroderma, and Postmenopausal Osteoporosis.

Philosophy of care | My motto is that if I listen to you hard enough, you will tell me what’s wrong. I also like to view you as a whole rather than focus on one problem. I see how your symptoms are impacting your daily life and try to improve upon that. | Why I entered medicine | I’ve always liked science, and any profession that incorporates biology and helping people is a good mix. I grew up in a family of doctors, so I was exposed to the field early on. I remember my dad seeing his patients in the supermarket, and it was just a very friendly encounter – you could tell his patients were very appreciative of him. I see that doctor-patient relationship as a special kind of bond, especially since I will see many of my rheumatoid patients for the rest of their lives. | Personal interests | My husband and I enjoy biking, and we do a lot of city-to-shore bike rides. We also golf and have done rec league softball and football. Really, we enjoy any sport. We like hiking, too, as we can take our young daughter with us. Dr. Zavitsanos is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). Her top areas of expertise are Fibromyalgia, Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), Sjogren Syndrome, and Psoriasis.

Philosophy of care | Improving my patients' quality of life is of utmost importance. I love it when patients tell me they have returned to doing the things they enjoy most – whether that be work, exercise or a hobby – because their prescribed treatment is effective. | Why I entered medicine | Rheumatology is exciting to me because the treatment of autoimmune disease and arthritis has recently significantly improved. Many new medications, especially those to treat rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and gout have become available to physicians and patients in just the past 10 years. | Community involvement | I help organize fundraising and educational programs for our local chapter of the Arthritis Foundation. | Personal interests | I very much enjoy spending time with my family and friends, cooking with my children, and travel. What is the definition of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)?

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory disease that mainly affects the lining of joints of the hands, wrists, and knees, eventually causing chronic pain and swelling, decreased movement, with the erosion of bones and the development of joint deformities.  Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common type of autoimmune arthritis, most often affecting women (75%) who are between 20 and 50 years of age. The disease can also affect other parts of the body, such as the blood vessels, skin, eyes, lungs, and heart.   There are two main types of rheumatoid arthritis: 1) seropositive rheumatoid arthritis, and 2) seronegative rheumatoid arthritis. While both types of rheumatoid arthritis have the same symptoms, the seropositivity or negativity of the disease refers to the presence of anti-CPP antibodies in the blood, for which their presence means that the immune system is attacking normal cells. Most rheumatoid arthritis is seropositive.

When should I see a Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctor near Bethlehem, PA?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctor near Bethlehem, PA?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctors near Bethlehem, PA?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctors near Bethlehem, PA?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctor near Bethlehem, PA?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctor near Bethlehem, PA?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctors near Bethlehem, PA?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
