After enlisting in 1989, he earned an appointment to the U.S. Air Force Academy, graduating in 1996. He went on to fly the F-15C as a mission commander based out of Kadena AB, Japan, and was awarded the Air Medal for over 100 hours of combat time patrolling the Northern No Fly Zone over Iraq during the events of September 11, 2001.Following his aviation career, Lt Col Henderson pursued medicine, earning his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 2006. He completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Uniformed Health Education Consortium in San Antonio and a fellowship in Hand and Microvascular Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Since 2012, he has served at the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he has held leadership roles as Chief of Hand Surgery, Chief of Orthopedic Surgery, and Chief of Surgery for the 10th Medical Group. He has also been a dedicated team physician for Academy athletes. Lt Col Henderson’s career is a testament to his deep commitment to service, excellence, and care—hallmarks of both his military and medical professions. He followed this with a fellowship in hand and microvascular surgery at the Philadelphia Hand Center. Dr. Martyak served in the United States Air Force from 2008- 2012 achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He has extensive experience with combat casualty care with multiple deployments in Iraq and the Middle East. He was a clinical instructor for the combined US Air Force/ US Army combined orthopedic residency program at Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, TX. He is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. Dr. Gregg Martyak was part of the team to perform the first hand transplantation at a military facility. Dr. Martyak has continued to care for military patients in Colorado Springs since 2012.
