Dr. Karen Scandrett, MD, is a geriatrician and is certified in internal medicine and geriatric medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She directs the geriatric medicine fellowship at UPMC Presbyterian-Shadyside Hospital and the geriatrics training track for the Internal Medicine residency program. Dr. Scandrett received her medical degree from the University of Chicago in 1996 and completed her primary care internal medicine residency at the Cambridge Hospital, followed by geriatrics fellowship at the Harvard Division on Aging. While at Harvard she also completed her master’s degree in public health. Prior to joining the UPMC Division of Geriatrics in 2012, Dr. Scandrett was on faculty at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine where she coordinated education in post-acute care. At UPMC she piloted the geriatric trauma consultation service at Presbyterian Hospital, attended on the geriatric service at Magee Women’s Hospital, and provided post-acute care at Heritage Place. She was delighted to transition to office-based practice at Shadyside Hospital in 2019. Her clinical interests include patient-centered deprescribing, biopsychosocial approaches to chronic illness management, and geriatric-sensitive quality improvement in acute and post-acute care. When she is not providing patient care, Dr. Scandrett is involved in efforts to expand training opportunities in geriatric medicine. This provider only sees patients 65 years of age or older.
