I fell in love with neurology on day one of my clerkship year in medical school. To me, the opportunity to help patients and families through complex illnesses is simultaneously challenging and incredibly rewarding. I ultimately chose to sub-specialize in movement disorders because I enjoy being able to form long-term relationships with patients and families, and I'm optimistic that a disease-modifying therapy for Parkinson disease is within reach. I'm also a core faculty member of Duke's Trent Center for Bioethics, Humanities, and the History of Medicine, where I develop programs to help students and trainees understand the patient's perspective, improving clinician resilience and mitigating burnout. Outside of work, I am an avid runner and cyclist, looking forward to exploring trails around the Triangle. My passion for treating movement disorders grew after seeing dramatic improvements in my patients' quality of life due to both medical and surgical treatments. My specialty involves a combination of procedures (botulinum toxin injections, deep brain stimulator placement, and programming) and medication adjustments. I see patients with memory disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. In almost every encounter, I feel like I see two patients: the person with the disease and the person taking care of the person with the disease. The caregiver often needs as much attention as the patient because they are under a lot of stress, so I offer helpful tips, advice, encouragement, and resources. These diseases don’t have cures, so I spend a lot of time talking with caregivers, diagnosing the disease, and helping families cope. There are some medicines we use for these diseases, but their effect is fairly limited, so we also try to treat side effects, such as depression or behavioral problems. It’s a partnership between the doctor, the patient, and the family trying to keep the patient as safe, happy, and healthy as possible. I am also involved in research projects and enjoy both seeing patients and studying their diseases in the lab. Dr. O'brien is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Secondary Parkinsonism. His top areas of expertise are Cerebellar Degeneration, Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), Neuronal Intranuclear Inclusion Disease (NIID), and Alzheimer's Disease.

I see a spectrum of neurological disorders but specialize in Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, and other disorders in which people have difficulty moving, either too much or too little. A lot of what I see are disorders that keep people from performing daily, routine activities that we don't even think of until we can't perform them anymore. I will take as much time as I need to figure out what is going on with my patients, and I value developing relationships with them as I work to diagnose and treat them. Movement disorders is one of the fields of neurology in which you can physically see the difference that changes in medication or in treatment have on your patients. For me, one of the most satisfying parts of practicing neurology is when patients come back and tell me they're able to do something they weren't able to do before – like walk without a walker or play tennis or golf. Dr. Lee is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Secondary Parkinsonism. His top areas of expertise are Movement Disorders, Parkinson's Disease, Dysarthria, and Essential Tremor.

What is the definition of Secondary Parkinsonism?

Secondary parkinsonism is when symptoms similar to Parkinson disease are caused by certain medicines, a different nervous system disorder, or another illness.

Parkinsonism refers to any condition that involves the types of movement problems seen in Parkinson disease. These problems include tremors, slow movement, and stiffness of the arms and legs.

When should I see a Secondary Parkinsonism doctor in North Carolina, US?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Secondary Parkinsonism doctor in North Carolina, US?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Secondary Parkinsonism doctors in North Carolina, US?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Secondary Parkinsonism doctors in North Carolina, US?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Secondary Parkinsonism doctor in North Carolina, US?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Secondary Parkinsonism doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Secondary Parkinsonism doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Secondary Parkinsonism doctor in North Carolina, US?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Secondary Parkinsonism doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Secondary Parkinsonism doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Secondary Parkinsonism doctors in North Carolina, US?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Secondary Parkinsonism doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Secondary Parkinsonism doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Secondary Parkinsonism doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
