"Philosophy of care | Every new patient I meet, along with their families and loved ones, is encouraged to be an active participant in the plan of care and subsequent recovery. While being diagnosed with cancer often leads one to feel as though they have ""lost control,"" people need to be empowered to regain that sense of control and a positive outlook going forward. Through open communication and education, that becomes more tangible. | Also, I am a member of the breast cancer multidisciplinary consultation team. Together we review your diagnostic information and give you a written opinion reflecting the scope of your condition and recommendations for your best course of care. | Why I entered medicine | The practice of medicine is the perfect mix of art and science - my two favorite subjects throughout early education. That, coupled with a strong desire to positively impact the lives of others, stimulated my interest early on in pursuing a career in medicine. With ongoing research and technical advances in virtually all fields, it is also a career path that promises unending challenges, intellectual stimulation and opportunities for continual improvement in patient outcomes. | Community involvement | Through a generous contribution of time and materials from a relative, I was able to supply our Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg gift shop with plush seat belt covers designed with my breast cancer patients in mind. One hundred percent of the proceeds are donated to the Pink Ribbon Fund helping our underserved community members get mammograms. We are on our second shipment and hope to continue providing comfort and financial assistance to customers and benefactors, respectively. | Personal interests | Along with busy and fulfilling careers, my husband and I try to keep involved with our two children's academic and extracurricular activities as much as possible. When our schedules permit, we enjoy brief getaways to the beach and all of the amenities there. Finally, if the opportunity presents itself, I enjoy experimenting with recipes (especially baking) and jewelry design. I hope to one day take a course in more advanced skills and techniques beyond what I have taught myself so far.". Philosophy of care | My philosophy is to treat others as I would like to be treated. I enjoy helping patients understand their medical problem in order to make an informed decision. | Also, I am a member of the breast cancer and genetic cancer multidisciplinary consultation teams. Together we review your diagnostic information and give you a written opinion reflecting the scope of your condition and recommendations for your best course of care. | Why I entered medicine | My uncle is an emergency medicine physician who inspired me to become a doctor and encouraged me through my training. To this day, I still seek his advice. I chose hematology oncology because I enjoy taking care of patients who are confronting serious health challenges. My mother had breast cancer and she was helped greatly by her physicians and a recently developed targeted therapy called Herceptin. I feel optimistic that the field is rapidly evolving due to scientific breakthroughs and will continue to do so throughout my career. I want to be a part of helping people during this exciting time. | Community involvement | I volunteered in a free clinic during my training. | Personal interests | I’m married and have two boys. Philosophy of care | It is a privilege and a profound responsibility to be entrusted with the health and well-being of others. My goal is to listen carefully, treat holistically and advocate for every individual I care for – recognizing the human story behind every diagnosis. | Why I entered medicine | From an early age, I was deeply drawn to the idea of helping others, and medicine offered the most direct, meaningful way. This passion led me to pursue medical school and internal medicine training in Ethiopia, where I developed not only my clinical foundation, but also a deep sense of purpose in serving vulnerable populations. My experiences – from rural clerkships to international humanitarian missions with Doctors Without Borders – have reinforced my career choice. Each patient I meet reminds me why I entered medicine: to alleviate suffering, advocate for equity and offer compassionate, evidence-based care to those who need it most. | Personal interests | Outside of work, I love to spend time with my family. Philosophy of care | The healing process requires trust, knowledge and hope. I try to create a feeling of trust, give patients the knowledge they need to understand their own condition, and of course, develop a plan that gives them hope. I treat my patients as if they are a member of my family or a close friend. I committed myself to that when I first thought of becoming a doctor. I know what it means. My dear aunt and grandmother both had breast cancer. I know how it affected my own family. Treating a patient like a member of the family means empowering my patients with understandable information and formulating a treatment plan that makes sense to them. I share my perspective with my patients, try to eliminate the unknown and help them to see the light after passing through darkness. | Also, I am a member of the breast cancer multidisciplinary consultation team. Together we review your diagnostic information and give you a written opinion reflecting the scope of your condition and recommendations for your best course of care. | Why I entered medicine | I was conflicted between my passion for classical music as a concert pianist and for the art of medicine as an intellectual. I came to a conclusion that I could combine both arts and make a compassionate career with the product of my hands - the art of Surgery. | Community involvement | I am committed to church activities, medical missions and mentorship. I am actively engaged in women's programs such as 'Show your chapeau', a fundraiser musical event to benefit breast cancer patients. | Personal interests | My interests are classical piano, church organ and oil painting. I am also fluent in Portuguese, Spanish and Korean. Dr. Whang is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer. Philosophy of care | I pride myself on taking care of people, not diseases or body parts. | People come with histories, belief systems, truths and misconceptions about their diagnoses based on their prior experiences and those of others. I try to understand and appreciate where they’re coming from and all aspects of their life when treating them. | A cancer diagnosis can be frightening, and I don’t take that lightly. Patients allow me into their lives at what may be the scariest time ever for them. I try to include the family in treatment because family is important and the diagnosis involves everybody, not just one person. | I’m a member of the breast cancer multidisciplinary consultation team. Together, we review your diagnostic information and give you a written opinion reflecting the scope of your condition and recommendations for your best course of care. | Why I entered medicine | I was born and raised in Allentown, and Lehigh Valley Health Network has been part of my family as long as I can remember. | I grew up on the South Side of Allentown, not far from the LVH–Cedar Crest campus when it was a single building in what seemed the middle of a cornfield. My mother was treated for breast and lung cancer there. My father was treated for Legionnaire’s disease there. My brother was treated there for osteochondrosarcoma, a bone and cartilage cancer. I came from a family of blue-collar workers and nobody had been to college, but my family’s experience with cancer and disease inspired me to go to medical school and become a cancer surgeon. | Community involvement | I’m part of anything affiliated with breast cancer fundraising. I don’t belong to a lot of philanthropic organizations outside the hospital, but I participate in any activities the hospital sponsors, particularly when they’re related to breast cancer. | Personal interests | I collect shoes, and have for many years. Some are vintage or from notable designers who people might know from various TV shows, like Manolo Blahnik. I have a room in my home just for shoes, but they’re not strictly for display – I wear them every day. | As a woman in medicine who takes care of predominantly women, this is something fun I can share. In fact, I’ve become known for it, so new patients often look first at my feet to see what I’m wearing! I also enjoy Peloton, which is a type of stationary exercise bike with a large screen that allows you to connect with a community of users. It’s like a fitness Facebook except everybody doesn’t know all your business. My username is HellonHeelz. Dr. Alfonse is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer. She is also highly rated in 9 other conditions, according to our data. What is the definition of Triple-Negative Breast Cancer?

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), a subtype of breast cancer, is a rare, malignant breast disease that lacks receptors for the hormones estrogen and progesterone and the human epidermal growth factor (HER2) protein usually found in other breast cancers. An aggressive cancer, triple-negative breast cancer grows and spreads more quickly than other types of invasive breast cancer. Triple-negative breast cancer is also more likely to reoccur and has a worse outcome (prognosis) than other breast cancers. Triple-negative breast cancer accounts for 10-15% of all breast cancers and is more common in women under the age of 40 who are African American or Hispanic, and who carry the BRCA1 gene mutation. Seventy percent of breast cancers in individuals with a BRCA gene mutation are triple-negative. Triple-negative breast cancer is classified in the following stages: Stage 0 – Ductal cancer in situ (DCIS), which is a non-invasive breast cancer. The cancer cells are still located in a breast duct and have not spread. Stage 1A – The breast cancer tumor is 2 centimeters or smaller and has not spread. Stage 1B – The tumor is 2 centimeters or smaller (or undetectable) with microscopic spread (micrometastases) into one-to-three axillary (underarm) lymph nodes. The metastasis is more than .2 millimeters but less than 2 millimeters and has not spread to other parts of the body. Stage IIA – One of the following has occurred, and the cancer has not spread beyond the lymph nodes: 1) The tumor is 2 centimeters (or undetectable) and has spread to one-to-three axillary (underarm) lymph nodes, with the cancer in the lymph nodes greater than 2 millimeters; 2) the tumor is 2 centimeters or smaller (or undetectable) and microscopic cancer is found in the internal mammary (breast) lymph nodes; 3) the tumor is 2 centimeters or smaller (or undetectable) and has spread to one-to-three axillary (underarm) lymph nodes and the internal mammary (breast) lymph nodes; or 4) the tumor is greater than 2 centimeters but less than 5 centimeters, but has not spread to lymph nodes. Stage IIB – One of the following has occurred, and the cancer has not spread beyond the lymph nodes: 1) the tumor is larger than 2 centimeters but less than 5 centimeters and has spread to one-to-three axillary (underarm) lymph nodes, and microscopic cancer is found in the internal mammary (breast) lymph nodes; or 2) the tumor is larger than 5 centimeters but has not invaded the chest wall or skin. Stage IIIA – One of the following has occurred, and the cancer has not spread beyond the lymph nodes: 1) the tumor is less than 5 centimeters (or undetectable) and has spread to four-to-nine axillary (underarm) lymph nodes; or 2) the tumor is greater than 5 centimeters, has not invaded the chest wall or skin, but has spread to one-to-nine axillary (underarm) lymph nodes or internal mammary (breast) nodes. Stage IIIB – The tumor has invaded the chest wall or skin, but hasn’t spread to other parts of the body, and one of the following has occurred: 1) the tumor has not spread to the lymph nodes; 2) the tumor has spread to one-to-three axillary (underarm) lymph nodes, and microscopic cancer has spread to the internal mammary (breast) nodes; or 3) the tumor has spread to four-to-nine axillary (underarm) lymph nodes, or it has caused swelling in the internal mammary (breast) nodes. Stage IIIC – The tumor is any size (or undetectable), had not spread beyond the lymph nodes, and one of the following has occurred: 1) the cancer has spread to 10 or more axillary (underarm) nodes; 2) the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes under the clavicle (collar bone); the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes above the collarbone; 3) the cancer has spread to axillary (underarm) lymph nodes; or 4) the cancer has spread to four or more axillary (underarm) lymph nodes, and microscopic cancer is found in internal mammary (breast) lymph nodes. Stage IV – The cancer is any size and may or may not have spread to close lymph nodes, but it has spread to organs such as the liver, lung, brain, or bones, or other distant lymph nodes.

When should I see a Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctor near Allentown, PA?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctor near Allentown, PA?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctors near Allentown, PA?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctors near Allentown, PA?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctor near Allentown, PA?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctor near Allentown, PA?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctors near Allentown, PA?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Triple-Negative Breast Cancer doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
