I've been working in healthcare for over two decades, and what I like most about it is getting to know my patients well. When someone is told they have cancer, it's incredibly scary. But the good news is that there are better treatments now that can provide hope. My team and I make an effort to understand our patients, learn what's important to them, and support them through the challenging times. We use my knowledge and experience to lead a team of different experts who collaborate to try to cure cancer when possible and create treatment plans that align with the patient's preferences. I'm also well-versed in new and upcoming treatments due to my work in cancer research. I can explain them in simple terms so that everyone can understand, which helps patients feel more confident and engaged. I specialize in treating skin cancers like melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, and cancers that arise in the gastrointestinal tract, including colon and rectum. Outside of work, I'm a family man with a loving wife and two kids. We thoroughly enjoy living in North Carolina, with its beautiful scenery and outdoor activities such as hiking and sports. I've had the privilege of helping many patients, and I look forward to being there for you too. Dr. Shah is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Esophageal Cancer. His top areas of expertise are Familial Colorectal Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Multiple Myeloma, Lynch Syndrome, and Endoscopy.

As a medical oncologist and hematologist, I treat patients with common adult solid and hematologic cancers. My passion for cancer treatment is deeply rooted back to my childhood when I witnessed loved ones suffering from this devastating disease. As such, I share with patients and their families the feeling of desperation, pain and stress. In my view, cancer treatment is not only a medicine but also an art, as a physician needs to be sensitive to both the patient's physical, and emotional needs to keep their hope for getting better alive. I have particular interests in gastrointestinal malignancies, like esophageal, stomach, small bowel, colon, pancreatic, biliary and liver cancer. I provide my patients with evidence-based and the most advanced treatment options, including participating in clinical trial opportunities. Dr. Wang is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Esophageal Cancer. His top areas of expertise are Familial Colorectal Cancer, Colorectal Cancer, Familial Prostate Cancer, and Thrombocytopenia.

I graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1983 and served as a nuclear-trained officer on board two submarines before shifting to the Navy Medical Corps. Following medical school, I completed Diving Medical Officer training and served as head of diving research at the Naval Medical Research Center. After completing specialty training, I completed my 30+ year Navy career as Head, Radiation Oncology at Naval Medical Portsmouth Virginia. After returning to Duke, I served two years as Medical Director, Danville Center for Radiation Oncology, where I helped introduce technological advances into the clinical setting designed to improve treatment precision while minimizing treatment-related side effects. I joined Duke’s Wake County Radiation Oncology team in June 2017, and see patients in Raleigh and Cary. My clinical focus is on multi-disciplinary treatment of gynecologic, genitourinary, and lower gastrointestinal malignancies, with a focus on quality-of-life through minimizing treatment-related side effects. A significant portion of my practice involves advanced minimally invasive techniques in thoracic surgery to treat diseases such as lung or esophageal cancer. Another part of my clinical practice is spent taking care of patients with severe lung disease, especially those needing lung transplantation. Patients from all over the world come to Duke for lung transplantation. Research demonstrates that experience is very important in taking care of complex medical problems, both on the surgical side and on the medical side. We have one of the largest transplant centers in the world with excellent survival statistics, as well as the shortest wait list time. Instead of the national average which may be four to six months, our patients wait an average of about two weeks. One of the best aspects of being a patient or working at Duke is the people who work here. No matter how challenging the medical problems may be or what problems may arise, I know there’s a world’s expert a phone call away who can help intervene and I know that my patients will be cared for by committed Duke staff from across the hospital. Dr. Hartwig is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Esophageal Cancer. His top areas of expertise are Lung Cancer, Hiatal Hernia, Thymic Epithelial Tumor, Endoscopy, and Heart Transplant.

What is the definition of Esophageal Cancer?

Esophageal cancer is cancer that starts in the esophagus. This is the tube through which food moves from the mouth to the stomach.

When should I see an Esophageal Cancer doctor near Cary, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Esophageal Cancer doctor near Cary, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Esophageal Cancer doctors near Cary, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Esophageal Cancer doctors near Cary, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Esophageal Cancer doctor near Cary, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Esophageal Cancer doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Esophageal Cancer doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Esophageal Cancer doctor near Cary, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Esophageal Cancer doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Esophageal Cancer doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Esophageal Cancer doctors near Cary, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Esophageal Cancer doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find an Esophageal Cancer doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Esophageal Cancer doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
