My interest in geriatrics originated with my interactions with older adults while working as a clerk in my father's pharmacy as a kid. I enjoyed their wisdom and stories, and felt compelled to help them with the myriad of ailments that they encountered. My current practice includes care of people with a variety of common conditions of late life -- including dementia and other cognitive disorders, problems with mobility, and falls and multiple medications. Of course, care of older patients must include support for their family and caregivers, and, thanks to a terrific interdisciplinary team, we are able to provide that service as well. Finally, I have a special interest in caring for older adults around the time of surgery. Our newly established Perioperative Optimization of Senior Health (POSH) program promotes improved outcomes by providing pre- and post-operative care for those undergoing elective surgeries. Dr. Heflin is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Vascular Dementia. His top areas of expertise are Vascular Dementia, Cerebellar Degeneration, Delirium, and Alzheimer's Disease.

"A.T. Still, MD, the founder of osteopathic medicine, once said, ""To find health should be the object of the doctor. Anyone can find disease."" From my early days in medical school, I was taught to look at the whole person, meaning that I see each patient as more than just a collection of parts that may become injured or disease. This holistic approach taught me how to integrate the patient into the health care process as a partner. This basic foundation was expanded upon as I completed both my residence and fellowship at Duke. I like to think that in the years I have been practicing medicine, I have honored those words spoken by Dr. Still. As a board certified family physician, I have sought to promote wellness and wellbeing among my patients at all stages of their lives, through collaborative partnerships with them (and sometimes their caregivers) in what I believe is truly patient-centered care. I look forward to working with you or your loved one in the future. Together, we can find health.". Dr. Bayless is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Vascular Dementia. As a dedicated neurologist with a specialization in general and vascular neurology, I primarily treat patients suffering from stroke. Due to the preventable nature of stroke, I strive to focus on the stroke etiology. My work includes participation in innovative clinical trials primarily on stroke identification and later rehabilitation, allowing me to bring the latest treatments to my patients. My decision to pursue neurology was driven by a fascination with the intricacies of the human brain and a desire to provide tangible relief to those affected by neurological disorders. I started my health care career during college as a nursing assistant in a nursing home in Pennsylvania. During my training at Brown University, I came to discover that my true passion was caring for people with serious illness and spent the first decade of my career in hospitals, providing palliative services to patients admitted to the floors or intensive care units. Since then, missing longer-term relationships with patients, I've spent more time on the outpatient side of palliative care, working to partner with those with serious or advanced illnesses to help make life better. Whether treating pain, constipation, nausea, shortness of breath, anxiety, depression, fatigue, poor appetite, poor sleep, or any other symptoms making people feel lousy, I aim to use medicines and non-medicine strategies to improve quality of life and function. I also support everyone's Plan A of getting better and back to normal life and Plan B if things don't go as we hope. Helping someone become well enough to take a trip to the beach or the mountains or play a bit more with their kids or grandkids is what makes me tick!. My interest in medicine first grew from my experiences with family members who were ill. My training is in both general internal medicine and psychiatry. I supervise residents at Duke Outpatient Clinic and see patients in the solid organ transplant program for psychiatry. I believe in the essential nature of integrated care and extend that to the multiple areas in which I practice. My career interests center around the interplay of medicine and psychiatry, particularly in complex care settings. I consider my psychiatric practice to be psychotherapy-informed medication management. Outside of medicine, I enjoy running, watching and playing a variety of sports, listening to music, and traveling. I see geriatric patients challenged by experiences common in later life, such as managing a new or progressive medical condition, struggling with memory concerns, or caring for a loved one. Often they have not seen a psychiatrist earlier in life, and I help them navigate appropriate resources and discuss reasonable management and treatment options. The intersection of late-life depression and cognitive symptoms is especially intriguing to me. I am also happy to see older adults with advanced medical comorbidities which may complicate previously stable psychiatric conditions. I offer medication management, supportive psychotherapy, discussions of non-pharmacological interventions for brain health, introductions to local senior centers or support groups, and referrals to other treatment approaches, such as electroconvulsive therapy. My goal is to evaluate patients as accurately as possible and determine the cause of problems with memory or thinking. I may order tests to help achieve this goal. I am dedicated to developing, discovering, and using the latest health-related advances to evaluate, diagnose, and treat dementia. As a behavioral neurologist, my primary goal during clinic visits is to determine if brain function changes in adults above the age of 50 are related to the aging process or are suggestive of a neurodegenerative disease requiring further care. Common neurodegenerative diseases that are evaluated in the clinic include Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, and Lewy body dementia. Another focus during clinic visit is to address all neurological, psychiatric, and medical factors which may impact brain health. It is a privilege and honor to understand a patient's life-long journey. This is an important part of the clinic visit since it allows me to identify various risk factors throughout one's life which may lead to the development of a neurodegenerative disorder. This is also one of the main reasons I chose to become a behavioral neurologist. Dr. Liu is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Vascular Dementia. I see patients with memory disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. In almost every encounter, I feel like I see two patients: the person with the disease and the person taking care of the person with the disease. The caregiver often needs as much attention as the patient because they are under a lot of stress, so I offer helpful tips, advice, encouragement, and resources. These diseases don’t have cures, so I spend a lot of time talking with caregivers, diagnosing the disease, and helping families cope. There are some medicines we use for these diseases, but their effect is fairly limited, so we also try to treat side effects, such as depression or behavioral problems. It’s a partnership between the doctor, the patient, and the family trying to keep the patient as safe, happy, and healthy as possible. I am also involved in research projects and enjoy both seeing patients and studying their diseases in the lab. Dr. O'brien is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Vascular Dementia. His top areas of expertise are Cerebellar Degeneration, Alzheimer's Disease, Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), and Dementia.

"Geriatric medicine specialists all have personal stories about why we chose this complex branch of medicine. For me, it was my intergenerational upbringing and immigrant grandmother who always believed I would eventually become her doctor (""mi doctora""). Watching my grandmother and caregiver parents try to navigate the complicated health care system made me passionate about ensuring that the appropriate interprofessional care is delivered to older adults across all settings of care. Getting to share my passion with learners in the classroom, at medical meetings, and at the patient's bedside gives me energy. What is the definition of Vascular Dementia?

Dementia is a loss of brain function that occurs with certain diseases. It affects one or more brain functions such as memory, thinking, language, judgment, or behavior.

Vascular dementia is caused by a series of small strokes over time.

Dementia may also be referred to as major neurocognitive disorder.

When should I see a Vascular Dementia doctor near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

      • Your primary care provider recommends it.
      • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
      • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
      • You need specialized testing or procedures.
      • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Vascular Dementia doctor near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Vascular Dementia doctors near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Vascular Dementia doctors near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Vascular Dementia doctor near Durham, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Vascular Dementia doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Vascular Dementia doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Vascular Dementia doctor near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

      • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
      • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
      • Family history of disease
      • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
      • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
      • List of questions and concerns
      • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Vascular Dementia doctor?

      Here are some sample questions:

      • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
      • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
      • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
      • Are there other specialists I need to see?
      • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Vascular Dementia doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Vascular Dementia doctors near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Vascular Dementia doctor search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Vascular Dementia doctor that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Vascular Dementia doctor search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
