Patel completed a fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopy and Bariatric Surgery at Staten Island University Hospital, studying under world-renowned laparoscopic surgeon George Ferzli, MD. His training in advanced laparoscopy laid the foundation for his expertise in reflux and gastrointestinal surgery. Patel is passionate about helping patients find lasting relief and better health whether through weight management or advanced surgical treatment for reflux and other digestive conditions. He believes in a multidisciplinary approach to weight loss and maintenance, including behavior and lifestyle modification, diet and nutrition, metabolism, exercise options and pharmacotherapy. “I don’t ask any of my patients to do anything I wouldn’t do myself,” he says. “The goal is to develop a plan that is realistic and manageable to achieve results – and that holds true for whether we’re addressing weight loss or reflux relief. In 2022, Patel started the AtlantiCare Center for Heartburn, the only facility in New Jersey that is able to completely evaluate and customize a medical or robotic surgical treatment plan for acid reflux / gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Using state-of-the-art technology, he leads a multidisciplinary team that customizes surgery to each patient’s unique anatomy, correcting symptoms of acid reflux.
