Alvaro Galvez, MD, has seen firsthand the negative health impacts of obesity and other digestive conditions. That personal experience, combined with a passion for medicine and technology, has guided his career path. “After witnessing the amazing results and quick recovery after general and bariatric surgery using laparoscopy and robotics, I found my future in surgery,” he says. “I could not be happier and more excited with my choice of specialty.” Dr. Galvez earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Universidad Mayor de San Andres in La Paz, Bolivia. He completed his general surgery residency at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA, and his fellowship in Bariatric and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Saint Luke’s University Health Network in Allentown, PA. At AtlantiCare Physician Group, Surgical Associates, Dr. Galvez specializes in laparoscopic and robotic surgery, with a focus on bariatric and foregut surgery. Using the latest minimally invasive techniques, Dr. Galvez’s goal is to reduce the impact of surgery and help patients achieve the quickest and most comfortable recovery possible. Additionally, Dr. Galvez is a well-published author and presenter at national and international conferences on the topics of weight loss and minimally invasive surgery. He also treats patients with acid reflux (GERD) and heartburn, offering advanced surgical options when needed. As part of the team at the AtlantiCare Center for Heartburn—the only facility in New Jersey able to fully evaluate and customize both medical and robotic surgical treatment plans for GERD—Dr. Galvez uses state-of-the-art technology to tailor surgery to each patient’s unique anatomy. This individualized approach can fully resolve reflux symptoms, promote regression of Barrett’s Esophagus, and reduce the overall risk of cancer. Dr. Galvez spent part of his formative years training at AtlantiCare and was eager to return to an environment committed to excellence and compassionate care. “I trained at AtlantiCare and did not think twice when the opportunity to return presented itself. In his free time, he enjoys writing music, playing guitar and piano, exercising and taking long walks along the Atlantic City Boardwalk.
