"I knew I wanted to practice medicine since I was in high school, but had no idea it would be in psychiatry until my rotation in medical school. That's where I discovered that I loved spending time really getting to know my patients and their lives, not just their illnesses. While there are very few ""cures"" to mental illness, I feel like I'm helping my patients every day, often in the toughest times in their lives and making a real difference. My practice style tends to be both very evidence-based and collaborative. I try to present what the evidence says works for the highest percentage of people with a similar problem. But in psychiatry, the illnesses tend to be very heterogeneous (one person's depression isn't necessarily just like another's) and the science simply isn't to the level that it's predictive enough to give a ""right"" answer to any individual patient situation, taking into account genetics, personal characteristics and life history. I try to work with my patients to use my expertise and scientific evidence along with their knowledge of themselves, their preferences and their past experiences with treatment to try to come up with the best plan. Beyond my practice, I enjoy spending time with my family, which includes two kids, two cats and two dogs. I also love reading, knitting and spending time in nature.".
