Overview
Dr. Onuchic-Whitford is the Director of the Kidney Genetics & PKD Clinic at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She received her medical degree from the University of São Paulo in Brazil, where she also completed residency in Internal Medicine. She repeated Internal Medicine residency at the University of Connecticut, followed by clinical fellowship in adult nephrology in the joint Brigham and Women's Hospital / Massachusetts General Hospital program. Dr. Onuchic-Whitford's clinical practice is focused on genetic kidney diseases, including polycystic kidney disease, Alport Syndrome, thin basement membrane nephropathy, genetic FSGS (focal and segmental glomerulosclerosis), and congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), among many other inherited/familial kidney disorders. From a research standpoint, Dr. Onuchic-Whitford is interested in searching for genetic determinants of kidney diseases. During her postdoctoral research fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital, she studied the genetics of nephrotic syndrome and chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology. Her current research in computational genomics aims to identify mechanisms of gene regulation that can contribute to kidney disease.
