Dr. Anil Darbari

Dr. Wikrom Karnsakul is an associate professor of pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. His clinical interests are in the care of pediatric liver diseases, and general gastrointestinal diseases. Dr. Karnsakul received his medical degree in 1992 from Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Medical Center, Mahidol University School of Medicine in Bangkok, Thailand. He completed his residency in pediatrics at Advocate Hope Children's Hospital in 1998 and did a fellowship in pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition at Texas Children's Hospital, Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He completed his postdoctoral research training at USDA/ARS Children's Nutrition Research Center, Baylor College of Medicine. He joined the faculty at Johns Hopkins in 2008. His research interests center on the understanding and treatment of chronic liver disease, ascites, cholestasis, viral hepatitis especially hepatitis C and hepatitis E, and Cystic Fibrosis Related Liver Disease. Dr. Karnsakul is also involved in NIH-funded multicenter research studies including the Cholestatic Liver Disease Consortium and Cystic Fibrosis Related Liver Disease Project. Michael Hsieh, MD, PhD, is a urologist at Children's National Hospital. Dr. Hsieh has experience in laparoscopic and robotic surgery for urologic conditions and specializes in bladder diseases affecting children and young adults. He is board-certified in urology and holds the certificate of added qualification in pediatric urology. Dr. Hsieh was recruited to Children’s National and the George Washington University to serve as Director of Transitional Urology. This joint venture is the East Coast's first clinical program dedicated to the care of adolescents and young adults with congenital urologic disorders. Many of these patients have chronic cystitis and are at increased risk of bladder cancer, diseases which dovetail with Dr. Hsieh’s research interests. Dr. Hsieh also is the Director of Research for the Division of Urology and the Associate Director for Science at the Sheik Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation. He runs an NIH-funded bladder biology research group. Dr. Hsieh has been a Recognized Doctor on the Healthgrades Honor Roll and Best Doctors in America. He has been featured several times in the New York Times for his work in robotic surgery and bladder inflammation. He attended Stanford University and returned to the East Coast for medical school at Thomas Jefferson University. During medical school, Dr. Hsieh also obtained a PhD in immunology and afterwards began exploring what would eventually become his long-term interest – the role of bladder inflammation in urinary tract infections and development of bladder cancer. He completed his urology residency training at the University of California San Francisco and pediatric urology fellowship training at Texas Children’s Hospital. As a pediatric urology fellow, Dr. Hsieh began studying how the commensal microbiome (the collection of naturally occurring, non-pathogenic bacteria in and on our bodies) may prevent urinary tract infections. Following fellowship training, he was an Assistant Professor at Stanford University, where he founded an NIH-funded research group focused on bladder inflammation, urinary tract infections and bladder cancer.
