Dr. Anita Kumar is a specialty care physician board certified in gastroenterology. She joined Inova in 2022 and has been practicing since 2008. Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Kumar worked as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the gastroenterology and hepatology department at GW Medical Faculty Associates and George Washington University in Washington, DC. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine at George Washington University Hospital, where she received an award for excellence in clinical education voted on by the medical students at Inova Fairfax Hospital. She then completed a fellowship in digestive and liver diseases at George Washington University Hospital, where she completed research in inflammatory bowel disease, hepatology and celiac disease. She manages both acute and chronic illnesses, performs emergency interventions, and delivers high quality preventive care. She performs diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy as well as colonoscopy. Her clinical areas of interest include preventive health; women's gastrointestinal health; diseases of the esophagus, stomach and small bowel such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, dyspepsia, gastritis and celiac disease; and diseases of the colon including polyps, gastrointestinal bleeding, diverticular disease, inflammatory bowel disease and irritable bowel syndrome. Dr. Kumar believes that patient education leads to more successful outcomes. Therefore, she takes the time to answer questions, address patient needs and emphasize the importance of preventive medicine. She strives to make each visit a positive experience by focusing on patients as individuals. Dr. Kumar works with other providers using a multidisciplinary approach to ensure patients get the high quality care they deserve. She hopes to build long lasting relationships with her patients by providing clear communication, honesty and trust. Outside the office, Dr. Kumar likes to travel, dance and work out.
