Overview
Dr. Anthony Shum is a pulmonologist who specializes in autoimmune lung diseases. After completing a clinical fellowship at UCSF, Shum received research training in immune tolerance as part of the UCSF Immunology Program. The focus of his lab's research (shumlab.ucsf.edu) is to understand how autoimmune lung diseases develop by intensively studying patients with these disorders and modeling the human disease in mice. In his research, Shum identified a novel lung-specific antigen (a substance that triggers an immune response) that is targeted in patients with autoimmune lung disease, and he demonstrated that autoantibodies to this antigen could be used as a biomarker to detect patients with lung autoimmunity. His lab also recently helped discover the genetic basis of COPA syndrome, an inherited autoimmune disorder that can lead to severe lung and joint disease. Through his research, Shum hopes to directly impact patient care by discovering biomarkers for diagnosis and targets for effective therapies.
Dr. Shum is highly rated in 6 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Acute Interstitial Pneumonia, Interstitial Lung Disease, Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, and Pulmonary Fibrosis.
