Overview
I grew up in North Carolina, Ohio, and Arizona. As a kid, I was active, athletic, and loved science. I was awarded an engineering scholarship and majored in math before changing my focus to medicine. My mom – who emphazided the importance of education – earned her PhD. She, along with an uncle who was a pathologist, were sources of inspiration to me. If I hadn’t pursued a medical career, I’d be an elementary school teacher. Even when they’re sick, kids let their personalities shine through. Because children’s development processes affect their whole lives – and their families – I felt I could have the most impact as a pediatrician. I come from a family of teachers, and education has always been a key to my family’s success and quality of life. It’s important that we continue to make affordable, quality education accessible to all, and encourage students to go into scientific and medical fields because those are the jobs of the future. As a hospitalist, I interact with children and families for a snapshot in time, when people are often outside their comfort zone. So I make the most impact I can, delivering quality health care and making sure they have the resources they need. I also supervise residents and teach this patient-centered focus in their training.
