Dr. John K. Roberts

It has been my privilege to care for lung transplant patients for over 20 years. I have found that helping patients and their loved ones along their transplant journey to be very rewarding. My job as the Medical Director of the Duke Lung Transplant Program is to help equip our team to work collectively to achieve the best outcome for our patients. Our mission is to serve patients and the transplant community with a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary team approach to create a pathway to transplant, particularly for those facing barriers from medical co-morbidities. This requires a commitment to communicate and collaborate across all disciplines in both the outpatient and inpatient settings. We want to make the patient experience the best it can possibly be. We also recognize that in order to improve outcomes in lung transplants, there must be significant advances in the prevention and treatment of chronic lung allograft dysfunction (CLAD). Therefore, we support clinical research efforts to this end, participate in the most promising trials, and provide our patients the opportunity to enroll in them. I am proud to serve as the Chief of the Duke Division of Gastroenterology. In addition to my administrative duties, I enjoy my clinical practice focused on the care of patients with liver diseases. I also continue to participate in clinical research and hope that these studies offer our patients the latest advances and treatment options. I believe that an informed patient makes the best health care decisions with physician guidance. Kidney transplantation, while life-saving, can be an overwhelming event for our kidney transplant recipients, and for their care-takers after transplantation. Therefore, I think it is critical that we transplant physicians make it a priority to thoroughly and clearly communicate with our patients about all aspects of transplantation and to do our best to explain the complex medical considerations frequently underlying our decisions on what to do for our transplant recipients. I chose to pursue transplant medicine as a career because I see how receiving an organ transplantation can be such a life-changing event for our patients, and at the same time how much more can still be done to make this therapy more streamlined and less complicated for our patients in need.
