Mather Chair, Surgical Oncology, Inova Schar Cancer Chief, Division of Surgical Oncology, Inova Surgery Service LinePeter Learn, MD, FACS, FSSO, is a specialty care physician board certified in surgery with a subspecialization in complex surgical oncology. He joined Inova in 2022 as Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and has been practicing since 2001.Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Learn served as a surgical oncologist at the Murtha Cancer Center, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center; Vice Chair of Surgery for Education and Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery at Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences; and Chair of the Department of Defense National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Steering Panel. He has been an advocate for improving the quality of surgical care within hospitals and health systems, and his research has focused on system-level factors impacting outcomes and equity in the delivery of surgical care.Dr. Learn’s clinical areas of interest focus on the surgical treatment of cancers of the pancreas, bile ducts, intestines and stomach; cancers and benign conditions of the liver; neuroendocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract; soft-tissue sarcomas; and melanoma. He centers his practice around a commitment to ensuring that patients achieve a good understanding of their diagnosis, the role of surgery in their multidisciplinary treatment plans, potential alternatives to consider, and what changes to expect after surgery, both in the near term and over the long term.Dr. Learn is a Fellow of the Society of Surgical Oncology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
