Dr. Robert Koivunen

Dr. Biermann serves as Director of the Musculoskeletal Oncology Program at the University of Michigan. Her clinical interests include malignant and benign tumors of soft tissue and bone, both primary and metastatic. Her practice includes both adults and children. Dr. Biermann chairs the Multidisciplinary Sarcoma Tumor Board, a collaborative cancer center group including medical and pediatric oncologists, pathologist, diagnostic radiologists, and radiation therapists. The Sarcoma clinic meets weekly. The University of Michigan Sarcoma team engages in patient care, clinical trials, and basic science research. In addition to her regional responsibilities, Dr. Biermann has been active in national committee and administrative work. She chairs the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Bone Tumors Panel. She is past president of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS). Dr. Biermann is the University of Michigan Medical Director for the Sarcoma Program and the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program Director. Michelle Caird, M.D. is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Michigan Medicine. She is a busy member of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics. Her areas of special expertise include treating fractures and spinal deformity in children with osteogenesis imperfecta, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy. In the laboratory she investigates bone healing in these diseases. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors of the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America (POSNA) and in 2012 she was selected to represent POSNA in Northern Europe as one of the POSNA Traveling Fellows, where she studied and taught at major European centers. Dr. Caird is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Scoliosis Research Society, and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America. He then went on to earn his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. During his medical education, he also dedicated one year to perform orthopaedic research at the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Kheir completed his five-year Orthopaedic Surgery residency training at the Indiana University School of Medicine. During residency, he completed two surgical missions to Honduras where he taught surgical techniques, lectured, and performed life-changing procedures. He then completed a fellowship in Adult Joint Reconstruction and Replacement at Cornell University and the Hospital for Special Surgery.Dr. Kheir is an active member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, Michigan Orthopaedic Society, and the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association. He has authored over 75 peer-reviewed publications, and presented his work at international, national and regional meetings. He has received numerous awards in recognition of his research and has been featured in several online media articles. Dr. Kheir has been directly involved in four international consensus meetings to create guidelines for managing hip and knee arthritis and complex arthroplasties. He has further immersed himself into research by leading multiple clinical trials as the principal investigator. He also serves on the editorial board and as a peer reviewer for clinical journals to ensure the high quality of clinical data that impacts patient care.
