Overview

Dr. Javaheri is a pulmonologist, and an internationally known sleep physician currently working at Bethesda North Hospital. He is Professor Emeritus of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and Adjunct Professor of Medicine, Division of Cardiology, at Ohio State University. He is known for his extensive research on various sleep disorders, including sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease, with an emphasis on heart failure, opioids-associated sleep apnea, and complex sleep apnea.Dr. Javaheri completed his clinical and research fellowship in pulmonary medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He joined the University of Cincinnati in 1983 and established a clinical and research sleep lab at the VA Medical Center, where he has done extensive research in the areas of sleep-related breathing disorders and cardiovascular diseases. These research studies have been published in many peer–reviewed journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, Circulation, Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Thorax, American Journal of Medicine, European Heart Journal, Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, Journal of Sleep, Chest and American Journal of Respiratory Disease and Critical Care Medicine.Dr. Javaheri is currently on the editorial board of the Journal of Sleep and the Section Editor for Sleep-Related Breathing Disorders and Cardiovascular Diseases in the Principles and Practice of Sleep Medicine. In 2019, at the American College of Chest Physicians, he was the recipient of the late Dr. Tom Petty award and delivered a lecture on central sleep apnea in heart failure. He is involved in a phase 3 trial, and National Institutes of Health approved grant, which includes a randomized placebo controlled trial for treatment of central sleep apnea with oxygen in patients with heart failure.Dr. Javaheri has lectured in many countries including China, Japan, Sweden, Finland, Iceland, Tunisia, India, Iran, South Korea, Australia, Italy, Austria, Germany, France, Scotland, Denmark, Brazil, Belgium, Netherlands, Canada, Argentina, Oman and Spain. These lectures have dealt primarily with sleep-disordered breathing, obstructive and central sleep apnea and its relation to congestive heart failure. He is a member of the American Thoracic Society and American Sleep Disorders Association, and a Fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians.
