Dr. Surupa S. Gupta

Richard Burkhart, M.D., is an Associate Professor of Surgery at The Johns Hopkins Hospital with a focus on complex minimally-invasive surgery and research for cancers of the pancreas, liver and bile ducts. Dr. Burkhart received his medical degree from Boston University and completed his surgical residency and research fellowships at the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Association of Cancer Research, the American College of Surgeons, the Society of Surgery for the Alimentary Tract, the Pancreas Club, and the Society of Surgical Oncology. Outside the operating room, Dr. Burkhart heads a multidisciplinary laboratory team dedicated to bringing next-generation precision medicine approaches into the routine clinical care of patients that we serve. He has a particular research interest in using personalized models of pancreas cancer, made from tumor during and immediately after surgical resection, to select the best chemotherapy for each patient to support long-term survival and improve rates of disease cure. The laboratory team, funded in part by the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, the Lustgarten Foundation and Stand Up to Cancer, is also thankful to the many patients who have supported the work through philanthropic gift. Dr. Cameron has had a long and distinguished career in alimentary tract diseases and specifically in pancreatic cancer. He has won worldwide acclaim for mastering the Whipple procedure. At the beginning of his career, the mortality rate from the Whipple procedure was nearly 30 percent. He has worked to lower that to 1 percent to 2 percent at Johns Hopkins. He has operated on more patients with pancreatic cancer and done more Whipple resections than any other surgeon in the world. In addition to maintaining a busy practice that focuses mainly on pancreatic surgery, he has been a leader in the surgical profession, serving as president of the American College of Surgeons, Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract, Southern Surgical Association, Society of Clinical Surgery, Society of Surgical Chairmen, Halsted Society and American Surgical Association. He served as chief of surgery for The Johns Hopkins Hospital for nineteen years. Dr. Cameron obtained his undergraduate degree from Harvard University in 1958, and his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1962. Dr. Jacobs is the Division Chief of the Division of Breast Cancer Surgery. She also established the Johns Hopkins Medicine Breast Center at Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Centerl in Columbia. Dr. Jacobs sees patients at both The Johns Hopkins Hospital and at Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center. As division chief of breast cancer surgery, Dr. Jacobs leads an expert team of 9 surgeons located at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore; Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center; Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C.; and Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. She has also initiated new clinics at Johns Hopkins Health Care & Surgery Center - Green Spring Station in Lutherville; Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center, and the Skip Viragh Outpatient Center Building in Baltimore. Dr. Jacobs is committed to providing excellent, comprehensive, and patient-centered breast cancer care throughout Johns Hopkins Medicine through close collaboration with oncology, plastic surgery, nursing, rehabilitation medicine, and genetic services. Additionally, Dr. Jacobs has a clinical interest in the treatment of early stage melanoma. She works closely with dermatologists and medical oncologists at Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center to improve awareness and care of melanoma patients by participating in educational programs and clinical research trials. She has also launched research programs in lymphedema and oncoplastic surgery to increase the number of women eligible for breast prevention by combining lumpectomy with plastic surgery techniques to reshape the breast. In addition, Dr. Jacobs is the surgery representative to the National Clinical Trials Network for the Johns Hopkins Executive Committee and the institutional surgery representative to the Translational Breast Cancer Research Consortium. She serves as the Chair of the Cancer Committee at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and at Johns Hopkins Howard County Medical Center, which establishes both programmatic and quality improvement goals for cancer care across the health system on a yearly basis.
