Overview

I am a breast surgeon who takes care of patients with both benign and malignant breast disease. As a surgeon, I enjoy operating, but my favorite part of my work is developing a relationship with my patients, while providing them with the most state of the art breast care. My patients inspire me on a daily basis. I’m always impressed with their strength and conviction. The field of breast cancer research has exploded in recent years in terms of advancements in both diagnosis and personalized treatment options, which keeps me excited and energized. What’s great about our practice is that not only is it an intimate setting and convenient location, but we also have all the tools and specialists of a large practice. Outside of work, I like to spend time with my blended, modern family.

I became interested in breast surgery, because it combined surgery with science and the ultimate multidisciplinary patient care. Being a breast surgeon also allows me to work with other specialties and combine our talents to provide patients with the compassion and excellence they deserve. I grew up with a passion for math and science, and my mother always thought medicine would be a good fit. I, however, needed a little more convincing. It wasn’t until medical school and my discovery of surgery that I was sold on the idea. In addition to patient care, I participate in research related to breast cancer, breast cancer risk assessment, and benign breast disease. Working with the Breast Risk Assessment Clinic, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to meet women with an increased risk of breast cancer and help them determine the best management strategy for their breast health. I also enjoy working with residents and students, helping to train the next generation of physicians. My husband, also a surgeon at Duke Health, and I love to try new restaurants and spend time with family and friends. Dr. Plichta is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in Mastectomy. Her top areas of expertise are Breast Cancer, BRCA Positive Breast Cancer, Galactocoele, Mastectomy, and Pancreaticoduodenectomy.

I became interested in medicine after my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. I strive to provide individualized care to my patients, making sure that they understand their diagnosis and all treatment options. My goal is to get to know my patients by listening to their concerns, so we can make the best treatment decision together using my breast treatment expertise. Having gone though breast cancer treatment with my mom, I understand the impact of the diagnosis on the rest of the family. Treating breast cancer patients is my passion. I have special interest in treating young women with breast cancer, those with genetic mutation, and women with increased risk of breast cancer. I also pay attention to cosmetic outcomes while completing breast cancer surgery using oncoplastic techniques. I also perform nipple-sparing mastectomy whenever possible and utilizing new techniques such as minimally invasive robotic mastectomy and nipple sensation sparing mastectomies. When I’m not working, I enjoy traveling and spending time with friends and family. Dr. Chiba is rated as a Distinguished provider by MediFind in Mastectomy. Her top areas of expertise are Breast Cancer, BRCA Positive Breast Cancer, Paget Disease of the Breast, Mastectomy, and Lymphadenectomy.
