
Overview
Stephen R. Broderick, M.D., MPHS, is an assistant professor of surgery at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a thoracic surgeon, part of a multidisciplinary team treating lung cancer patients in the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center. Dr. Broderick has a clinical expertise in surgical treatment of lung cancer, esophageal cancer and other thoracic malignancies, as well as benign thoracic conditions. This includes achalasia, bronchoscopy, chest wall reconstruction and tumors, lung nodules and paraesophageal hernias. He has a clinical interest in minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer and the coordinated delivery of multidisciplinary care for thoracic oncology patients. Before joining Johns Hopkins, Dr. Broderick was a thoracic surgeon at St Luke’s Hospital, where he served as the medical director of the cardiothoracic intensive care unit and a member of the oncology steering committee. He also served as an instructor of surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Broderick received his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine in 2003 and he completed his internship and residency training in general surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He studied the molecular biology of lung cancer as a research fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he received the Chairman's Award for outstanding contributions to the basic science research fellowship. Dr. Broderick also completed a fellowship in thoracic surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in 2012 and earned a Masters in Population Health Science from Washington University School of Medicine in 2014. Dr. Broderick is a member of the American College of Chest Physicians, The Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Dr. Broderick’s research interests are focused on improving outcomes for lung cancer patients. He is particularly interested in studying how various treatments for early-stage lung cancer impact patients’ quality of life. Dr. Broderick has contributed to numerous publications and is a reviewer for the Journal of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, as well as Annals of Thoracic Surgery.

Errol L. Bush, M.D., FACS, is a thoracic surgeon and surgical director of the Advanced Lung Disease and Lung Transplant Program for the Johns Hopkins Comprehensive Transplant Center. He also serves as director of the Ex vivo Lung Perfusion Program (EVLP). Dr. Bush specializes in the surgical treatment of chronic and end stage lung diseases, as well as benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) diseases and lesions of the chest. He is skilled in minimally invasive operations such as video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS), a type of thoracic surgery performed using a small video camera that is introduced into the patient's chest via a scope to treat lung and esophageal cancers. Dr. Bush also has experience with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), a technique of providing both cardiac and respiratory support oxygen to patients whose heart and lungs can no longer serve their function. His research interests include investigations of outcomes and health disparities related to lung cancer, lung transplant and ECMO patients. Dr. Bush is currently leading several open clinical trials.
