Dr. Alexander Itskovich
Overview
Alexander Itskovich, MD, is a regionally known hepatobiliary, pancreatic cancer and advanced gastrointestinal surgeon. He has been the medical director of oncology services at Statesir Cancer Center at CentraState Healthcare System, a partner of Atlantic Health System, since 2021.Board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery and fellowship-trained, Dr. Itskovich, in his clinical practice, specializes in treating diseases of the liver, pancreas, bile duct and gastrointestinal tract. He has extensive experience with highly complex procedures including HIPEC (hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) and performs minimally invasive surgery utilizing the da Vinci Robotic System.Actively involved in clinical trials, Dr. Itskovich is a primary investigator for the National Institutes of Health. His research is focused on pancreatic cancer and pancreatic cystic disease. Additionally, he runs a highly innovative screening program for family members of pancreatic cancer patients. In his administrative role, Dr. Itskovich is responsible for the comprehensive delivery of multidisciplinary care at the Statesir Cancer Center, an American College of Surgeons’ comprehensive cancer program. The Statesir Cancer Center has multiple specialty programs including radiation oncology, a nationally recognized breast center, an inpatient unit with Magnet® nursing care and multiple nationally recognized faculty.Dr. Itskovich is a member of the American College of Surgeons and speaks English, Hungarian and Russian. He is part of Atlantic Medical Group and a participating provider of the Atlantic Accountable Care Organization.

As a hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgeon, my expertise is in the surgical care of people who have cancer or benign disease of the pancreas, gallbladder, liver, and ampulla. However, my main area of expertise is pancreatic cancer.I chose to specialize in pancreatic cancer for a variety of reasons. It is a complex and aggressive disease that requires surgical and medical management based on innovative research. In addition, providing surgical treatment for pancreatic cancer demands great technical skills, and effective treatment requires a team of experts with access to the most sophisticated technology available.At Perlmutter Cancer Center, we perform more than 100 Whipple procedures—a complex surgery for cancer in the head of the pancreas—each year with outstanding outcomes. The mortality rate of Whipple procedures at our center is among the lowest in the world. I have performed more than 1,200 of these procedures.Our team has expertise in robotic surgery of the pancreas and liver, as well as in the removal of pancreatic tumors that involve major vessels, which is also known as locally advanced pancreatic cancer. We use transplants to manage certain types of liver tumors and offer precision treatment for all stages of pancreatic cancer.
