Duke Dermatology Clinic - Clinic 3K
I have two areas of clinical expertise: cutaneous lymphoma and hair disorders. In the area of cutaneous lymphoma, I have focused my research on clinical trials for new treatments and consensus building to establish standard guidelines for staging, evaluation, and treatment of patients, as well as the methodology used in clinical trials. My patients are invited to participate in my ongoing database, which captures their response to treatments. My goal is to find a cure for these cancers or, barring that, long lasting remissions. In the area of hair disorders, my goal is to help referring physicians diagnose and treat effectively multiple types of hair loss. My consultative practice is now focused on scarring alopecias, including frontal fibrosing alopecia and hair loss in African-American women in which causes are not obvious. My research focuses on collaborative work with multiple centers in the United States to help create knowledge and new treatments. Dr. Olsen is highly rated in 11 conditions, according to our data. After graduating from college, I was awarded a Fulbright fellowship and moved to Dublin, Ireland to work for the European Institute of Women’s Health. Shuffling between Birmingham and Boston for my medical training, I have settled in beautiful North Carolina with my husband who is a fellow in Hematology/Oncology at the University of North Carolina. We are enjoying the cultural richness of the Triangle area and the diverse landscape of North Carolina. Being a part of Duke’s amazing medical community has allowed me to pursue my clinical interest in complex medical dermatology and my translational research interest in neutrophilic skin diseases such as psoriasis and hidradenitis suppurativa. I am actively working on projects that focus on antibody-based therapies targeting immune dysregulation in skin disease. The most gratifying experiences for me as a physician have been providing treatment and support to patients struggling with skin diseases and contributing to improvements in their overall quality of life. My focus is on medical dermatology, particularly patients who are immunocompromised. My clinical career in Dermatology has focused on dermatologic problems in HIV+ patients and solid organ transplant recipients, as well as patients who are immunocompromised for other medical conditions. I established the Duke Dermatology Transplant Clinic with the goal to provide early identification and prompt treatment of skin cancers in SOTRs by providing easy access, assessment of risk, patient education, early biopsy, field therapy for pre-cancers, medical therapeutic modification of risks if possible, and coordinated care with surgery, oncology or radiation therapy when indicated. In September 2022, I retired from the Duke Outpatient clinical service and now serve as an attending physician at the Durham VA Health System. As a medical and surgical dermatologist, I have over 45 years of experience in helping patients maintain healthy skin. I have special expertise in managing patients with many moles and in the early detection and treatment of skin cancers, such as basal and squamous cell cancers as well as melanoma. To this end, I use a technique called dermoscopy in which a hand-held, illuminated magnifier is used to analyze moles and other skin lesions to help make a diagnosis and to decide if a biopsy might be needed or not. Prior to moving to North Carolina in 2016 to be closer to family, I ran a private dermatology practice in Boca Raton, Florida, which I started in 1979. I was also an affiliate professor in the dermatology department at the University of Miami, where I practiced pediatric dermatology and also ran the pigmented lesion clinic for many years. With every patient visit, my main goal is to help my patients in the safest, least invasive and most straightforward fashion possible. I enjoy talking with my patients and getting to know them. After all, as a patient myself, I value a skilled clinician that is also kind and compassionate. His top areas of expertise are Fetal Cystic Hygroma, Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma, Tufted Angioma, and Hemangioma.

How does MediFind rank Dermatologists near Durham, NC?
MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.
What types of insurance are accepted by Dermatologists near Durham, NC?
Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.
How can I book an appointment online with a Dermatologist in Durham?
MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Dermatologist search results page.
Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Dermatologist?
Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.
How can I prepare for my appointment with a Dermatologist near Durham, NC?
Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:
- Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
- Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
- Family history of disease
- List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
- Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
- List of questions and concerns
- Your insurance card
You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.
What questions should I ask my Dermatologist?
Here are some sample questions:
- Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
- What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
- What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
- Are there other specialists I need to see?
- What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?
How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Dermatologist may know about?
MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.
MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.
