I am dedicated to developing, discovering, and using the latest health-related advances to evaluate, diagnose, and treat dementia. For over 30 years, helping patients with metabolic bones diseases (osteoporosis and Paget’s disease of bone) and other disorders of mineral metabolism (vitamin D deficiency and hyperparathyroidism) has been one of the most rewarding parts of my career as a physician. I enjoy helping patients with complicated problems find ways to treat their disease. I have many patients that I have followed for 10 to 20 years, and I highly value the relationship we develop. We now have FDA-approved therapies to treat and prevent fractures in osteoporosis, and reduce pain and disability in Paget’s disease, so it is even more rewarding to help patients decide which treatments are best for them. Dr. Lyles is highly rated in 2 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Osteoporosis, Postmenopausal Osteoporosis, Fractured Spine, and Decerebrate Posture.

My practice helps older adults and their families deal with problems that often come with aging. While my research focuses on preventing falls and broken bones in older adults, I also care for people with memory loss, depression, weight loss, side effects from medications, incontinence, pain, difficulty getting around, and loss of independence. My clinic uses a team approach that includes a social worker, geriatric nurse specialist and geropsychiatrist. Instead of focusing on one problem at a time, we try to think about the whole person, making sure to understand the patient's goals and preferences, and helping to prioritize plans when there are many problems going on at once. It is a joy and privilege to work with older adults, and I especially love hearing stories accumulated over a lifetime. At home, I am a proud mother of two teenage boys and an active volunteer in our Boy Scout troop, church and community. Dr. Colon is highly rated in 1 condition, according to our data. My interest in geriatrics originated with my interactions with older adults while working as a clerk in my father's pharmacy as a kid. I enjoyed their wisdom and stories, and felt compelled to help them with the myriad of ailments that they encountered. My current practice includes care of people with a variety of common conditions of late life -- including dementia and other cognitive disorders, problems with mobility, and falls and multiple medications. Of course, care of older patients must include support for their family and caregivers, and, thanks to a terrific interdisciplinary team, we are able to provide that service as well. Finally, I have a special interest in caring for older adults around the time of surgery. Our newly established Perioperative Optimization of Senior Health (POSH) program promotes improved outcomes by providing pre- and post-operative care for those undergoing elective surgeries. Dr. Heflin is highly rated in 3 conditions, according to our data. His top areas of expertise are Vascular Dementia, Cerebellar Degeneration, Delirium, and Alzheimer's Disease.

I was born and raised in Durham, North Carolina. During middle school, I spent my summer breaks volunteering in the nursing home where my mom worked, which inspired my interest in aging and geriatric medicine. Many years later, as a fellow in geriatric medicine at Duke Health, I returned to that same nursing home to care for its residents. Now, as a memory disorders specialist, geriatric medicine specialist, and physician-scientist, my goal is to provide the highest quality medical care to my patients, centered on their individual values and preferences, while working to develop interventions that maintain their cognition and quality of life. I enjoy building a collaborative relationship with my patients and their loved ones and working with them to develop a personalized, holistic approach to their memory care. "Geriatric medicine specialists all have personal stories about why we chose this complex branch of medicine. For me, it was my intergenerational upbringing and immigrant grandmother who always believed I would eventually become her doctor (""mi doctora""). Watching my grandmother and caregiver parents try to navigate the complicated health care system made me passionate about ensuring that the appropriate interprofessional care is delivered to older adults across all settings of care. Getting to share my passion with learners in the classroom, at medical meetings, and at the patient's bedside gives me energy. I hope to pass along my compassion for the unique needs of older adults to my two daughters.". Dr. Little is highly rated in 1 condition, according to our data. I see geriatric patients challenged by experiences common in later life, such as managing a new or progressive medical condition, struggling with memory concerns, or caring for a loved one. Often they have not seen a psychiatrist earlier in life, and I help them navigate appropriate resources and discuss reasonable management and treatment options. The intersection of late-life depression and cognitive symptoms is especially intriguing to me. I am also happy to see older adults with advanced medical comorbidities which may complicate previously stable psychiatric conditions. I offer medication management, supportive psychotherapy, discussions of non-pharmacological interventions for brain health, introductions to local senior centers or support groups, and referrals to other treatment approaches, such as electroconvulsive therapy. Dr. Dunbar is highly rated in 1 condition, according to our data. What is a geriatrician?

A geriatrician, also known as a geriatric doctor, is a physician who specializes in the healthcare needs of older adults. Geriatricians focus on managing the complex physical, mental, and social changes that often come with aging, such as managing multiple health conditions or chronic diseases. While a primary care doctor provides general medical care for people of all ages, a geriatric doctor is specifically trained to recognize and treat issues specific to older adults. Geriatricians consider how treatments interact with aging bodies and how they can support overall health and wellness for their patients.

At what age should someone start seeing a geriatric doctor?

Typically, people start seeing a geriatric doctor around age 65, especially if they have multiple health conditions, mobility challenges, memory issues, or other age-related concerns. However, there isn’t a strict age limit – any adult with complex health needs or concerns about aging may benefit from seeing a geriatrician. By working with a geriatrician, older adults receive care tailored to their needs, which can help prevent complications and improve daily functioning.

What tests are performed by a geriatrician?

A geriatrician performs various assessments to evaluate an older adult’s overall health. Common tests include memory tests to check for cognitive changes, mobility assessments to identify any risk of falls, and mental health screenings for depression or anxiety. They may also review medications to avoid drug interactions and conduct routine health tests like blood pressure and blood work to monitor chronic conditions. These tests are important for creating a personalized care plan that supports each patient’s health and independence.
