"I can distinctly remember the awe and utter amazement I felt watching my first cesarean delivery. I knew that there was a baby inside the mother's abdomen, but it was amazing to see the doctors deliver it. To see it just ""pop out"". Still, to this day, I get that feeling of awe and amazement every time I help a mom deliver her baby. I feel so lucky to be part of such a wonderful moment in a family's life. As a maternal fetal medicine specialist, I take care of sick moms, sick babies, and sick pregnancies. Each day, while I get to help women and their families with big wins and happy moments, I also have the opportunity to help them through sad times and some of the worst moments of their lives. It is these hard and sad moments that make the happy ones even more meaningful. I also spend some of my time helping to teach medical students about Ob/Gyn. I really enjoy teaching, and sharing my love for Ob/Gyn with young learners is one of my favorite parts of my job. My other very important job is being a mom. I have three fantastic young boys that keep me busy and remind me on a daily basis how important family is. I love to swim and make jam. Apricot Jam is my favorite.". I decided to pursue a career in obstetrics after observing a delivery during my first week of obstetrics training in medical school. The sheer excitement of every birth along with the knowledge of all of the possible complications faced by a mother was what attracted me to the field of maternal fetal medicine. Every day I feel privileged to be a part of this very personal experience for so many women. As a researcher in the areas of infectious diseases in pregnancy, I see it as my duty to help advance the care of women and their fetuses who may experience infectious complications. I hope to leave a mark on our field that leads to improved infectious disease outcomes for women and their children. I moved to the Chapel Hill area after many years of living and practicing in Rhode Island because of the outstanding group of physicians here. My family loves the area and getting out to explore all that North Carolina has to offer. Dr. Hughes is highly rated in 9 conditions, according to our data. Her top areas of expertise are High Blood Pressure in Infants, Cytomegalovirus Antenatal Infection, Congenital Cytomegalovirus, and Endometritis.

"I specialize in caring for pregnancies involving maternal or fetal conditions. While I enjoy caring for patients with a broad range of concerns, much of my work centers on caring for patients who are planning pregnancy or who are pregnant while living with heart conditions or blood disorders. I enjoy building relationships with my patients during pregnancy and helping ensure safe and healthy births. Every day, I am reminded how lucky I am to work among so many talented colleagues at Duke Health. One of the best parts of my job is seeing how teamwork and planning can make our patients' birth experiences positive and memorable, even when a pregnancy is considered ""high risk"".". I was a graduate student working on a combined MD and PhD in neuroscience research when my twin boys arrived prematurely and needed the services of the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This experience in the NICU environment inspired me to continue my work in neuroscience and specialize in neonatology. As a neonatologist, I care for newborn infants who require intensive care for different reasons, including being born prematurely, with heart defects or brain injuries. Providing treatment for critically ill infants, and helping to bring them to a place of stability and health, is truly gratifying. In addition to the clinical care I provide, I am involved in research regarding how to both mitigate and treat brain injuries which occur in infants due to premature birth. His top areas of expertise are Cerebral Hypoxia and Necrotizing Enterocolitis.

I specialize in the care of patients before, during, and after pregnancy. I have specialized training in prenatal diagnosis including diagnostic procedures such as amniocentesis and CVS. I also provide prenatal care for patients who may be considered high-risk for many reasons such as a pre-existing condition (high blood pressure, diabetes etc), a genetic or fetal condition, or an unexpected condition that arises during pregnancy such as pre-eclampsia or gestational diabetes. The most important thing to me is that patients feel like they have been listened to and heard during their visits with me. I try to treat every patient with the same level of care that I would want my sister or best friend to receive. Each patient know their body and their pregnancy the best and it is our job to work together as a team to have the best outcomes possible. Her top area of expertise is Methimazole Antenatal Exposure.

I am a neonatologist and am privileged to care for sick term and preterm infants who have difficulty after birth and require admission to the Duke Intensive Care Nursery. I am there to care for your baby from their first breath to ensure that the transition goes smoothly and care, if needed, is immediate. Some families face challenging diagnoses with their little ones, but assuring the family that we will be there for them with support and compassion during the process is invaluable. Resilience, compassion, and unconditional love are only a few values I have learned from my patients and their families. The neonatal intensive care unit is a unique place; we are all part of a big family, and I couldn’t be prouder to work alongside the most qualified medical providers in the nation. Outside of work, I love spending time with my family and searching for great restaurants in the Triangle. Her top area of expertise is Necrotizing Enterocolitis.

I am a neonatologist. I take care of critically ill newborn infants, which includes premature infants who have to stay in the hospital because of their size, and sick full-term babies who may need surgery or otherwise need an intensive care unit. I try to gauge what parents’ needs are and give them the most and best information on what’s happening with their baby. The NICU (neonatal intensive care unit) here at Duke does a really good job of incorporating the family in their baby’s care. Parents are invited to join on rounds when we talk about their baby and the next steps of their medical care and are able to be with their baby at all hours of the day. We are always trying to ensure we are incorporating the best into our practice, so we do research and compare ourselves to other nurseries, and I think our outcomes show it. His top areas of expertise are Premature Infant, Secondary Adrenal Insufficiency, and Pompe Disease.

When should I see a Neonatologist near Durham, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing a Neonatologist near Durham, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Neonatologists near Durham, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Neonatologists near Durham, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with a Neonatologist in Durham?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Neonatologist search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Neonatologist?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with a Neonatologist near Durham, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Neonatologist?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Neonatologist may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals. We use cutting-edge technology to scour medical publication databases for the latest research advancements on any given condition, then we simplify this information in a way that’s useful and easy to understand.

Can I filter my search to show male or female Neonatologists near Durham, NC?

Look for the filter feature on the left side of the Neonatologist search results page. Select “Female” or “Male” under the “Gender” category to search for female or male providers exclusively. If the “Any” option is selected, it will pull results for both male and female providers.

Can I filter my search to find a Neonatologist that offers video calls?

Look for the filter feature on the left-side of the Neonatologist search results page. Select “Offers telehealth visits” under the Availability category to search for providers who offer virtual appointments (video calls).
