I am a sports medicine and shoulder surgery specialist. I try to treat all patients as individuals and family. I grew up in North Carolina where I attended public schools through college. I do complex shoulder surgeries, such as reverse shoulder arthroplasty, total shoulder replacement, and superior capsular reconstruction for irreparable rotator cuff tears. I also do complex knee ligament surgery (ACL and others). I have had the good fortune to study at Harvard Medical School and later with international leaders in knee and shoulder surgery in Switzerland and France. I worked for 7 years in Cooperstown, New York where baseball injuries were a focus of mine. Returning athletes, grandparents, and weekend warriors to their highest level of function is my goal. Conservative care and rehabilitation are tried first, but if surgery is needed, I employ the most advanced, minimally invasive techniques using pain blocks for anesthesia to minimize the need for opioids and get home early and safely. As an orthopaedic surgeon with specialized training in sports medicine, I tend to see many athletes with musculoskeletal issues related to sports injuries and overuse. Not only do I participate in many different athletic endeavors, but I love being a spectator at all kinds of sporting events. One of my biggest joys is watching my two sons out on a field or a court, developing their athleticism and enthusiasm for sports. I have always been passionate about science and medicine, which made a career in sports medicine the perfect fit for me. As a former athlete myself, I appreciate the positive impact of sports and physical activity. Growing up in Pittsburgh, sports was an integral part of my life, so my decision to become an athletic trainer turned sports medicine doctor was a no-brainer. I may be a bit biased, but sports medicine is the best specialty as it allows the patient and physician to truly take a team approach to the treatment plan. My favorite encounters are those when patients return to share that they are running marathons or gardening again because their pain or function has improved as a result of our shared plan. When not working, I can be found enjoying the outdoors with my goldendoodle or traveling the country to see family and friends.
