Dr. Jessica M. Intravia
Overview
Jessica M. Intravia, MD is a specialist in the orthopedic care of the hand, wrist and elbow. She also specializes in the care of nerve injuries and microsurgery. She is an assistant professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra.
Dr. Intravia is a Connecticut native. She attended Cornell University with a focus in Biology and Society, where she graduated Cum Laude. During her time as an undergraduate, she received a NIH grant to study traditional medicinals used to treat malaria in the Venezuelan Amazon.
She remained at Cornell after graduation to obtain her Masters of Health Administration from the Sloan Program in Health Management. She was one of three students to be accepted into the prestigious five year accelerated B.S/M.H.A program.
For medical school, she attended the University of Connecticut where she graduated in the top quartile of her class. While at UCONN she also organized a free clinic to treat migrant farm workers.
She was one of two women in her class to complete her residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Los Angeles County Medical Center and the Keck School of Medicine at the University of California. She gained extensive experience in the management of complex polytrauma patients at this busy level 1 trauma center. During her chief resident year, she received a Young Surgeon Traveling Fellowship from the American Foundation for Surgery of the Hand. She then spent two weeks in Managua, Nicaragua performing pediatric hand surgery.
She obtained further sub-specialty fellowship training at the Philadelphia Hand to Shoulder Center and Jefferson University under the tutelage of Dr. A. Lee Osterman. While in Philadelphia, she traveled to Tegucigalpa, Honduras with Dr. Randall Culp to perform complex hand, nerve and microsurgery.
Dr. Intravia is fellowship trained in the latest advances in Nerve, Hand and Upper Extremity care with specific interests in minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques, fracture management, hand trauma and nerve injuries. She has authored numerous peer reviewed publications and presented at national Orthopaedic and Hand Surgery conferences. She is excited to be part of Northwell Health's Orthopedic Institute and looks forward to inspiring future medical students and residents in her role as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra University.

My clinical practice is confined to Surgery of the Hand. I joined the medical staff of NSUH in 1980, when I first entered practice, and have combined clinical hand surgery with teaching and research ever since. In 1995 I joined the medical staff at LIJMC. In 2011 I left private practice and joined the fulltime Northwell Department of Orthopaedic Surgery as Orthopaedic Residency Program Director and Chief of Hand Surgery. Taking care of patients is my primary interest and motivation to go to work every day. My goal is to treat every patient with the most care, compassion, and skill that I can manifest. Currently, I treat patients with a broad range of hand problems from arthritis and deformity to carpal tunnel syndrome, other nerve disorders, benign tumors, and Dupuytren s Disease. I was recognized with an Arnold P. Gold Foundation Gold DOC award for skill, sensitivity, caring, and compassion. I have been listed yearly in Castle Connelly s Best Doctors since 1998. I have been active in national and regional professional organizations, having served on more than 20 committees of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH), the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery and other professional organizations. I have been an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Hand Surgery since 1991. I was an officer of the NY Society for Surgery of the Hand between 1996 and 2000 and was President in my final year. For Northwell Health, I am Chief of Hand Surgery at NSUH and LIJMC. I served as the Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program Director from 2011-2023. I have been involved at Zucker SOM at Hofstra/Northwell in many roles: President of the SOM Faculty Council and a member of the Dean's Advisory Group (2019 to 2021), former Departmental Advisor for medical students interested in Orthopedics, teach Structure to M2's, and assist with the clinical experience for medical students in their 3rd and 4th years. I was recently appointed Director of Academics for the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, and participate in and mentor residents and faculty members in clinical and basic science research. I have had considerable outside academic activity, with nearly 50 peer review publications, over 100 podium and poster presentations, and dozens of faculty presentations at national courses and meetings.
