I grew up in Durham and I am extremely proud to work here at Duke. All of my family members still call the Bull City home. Most of my education was completed in Durham, except for four years I spent down the road in Chapel Hill. I played football there and developed an interest in orthopaedic surgery that led me home. I specialize in hip and knee replacement and am very fortunate to do so. We have the ability to help so many people with these operations. It is extremely rewarding to help someone get back to doing the things they want to do with their life. Duke is the kind of place where you are challenged by the most difficult cases weekly and I appreciate that fact. We have great doctors in every field and we work as a team on every aspect of a patient's care once they enter the hospital. I am the head of shoulder surgery at Duke. Connecting with and caring for patients is very rewarding and is the reason I went into medicine. I take pride in providing both operative and non-operative treatments based not only on the latest research and evidence but also on the unique individual needs and expectations of each patient. Being a tertiary level surgeon means that I frequently manage patients sent to me by other surgeons. “The needs of the patient come first” and “first do no harm” are two phrases that guide me during every patient interaction. This ensures that each patient receives the same care as I would provide a family member of mine. I am supported by an excellent team that all share the same mission of outstanding patient care. In my spare time, I enjoy traveling, reading, and staying active. Dr. Anakwenze is rated as an Advanced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Acute Pain. I am an orthopaedic physician and work in adult reconstructive orthopaedics, predominantly with hip- and knee-replacement surgeries. I also help manage revision surgeries and take care of people with infections or fractures around their implants. I am interested in the whole continuum of care for arthritis and not just the surgical treatment of it. Even though I specialize in surgery, not everyone needs that treatment, and as an orthopaedic doctor, my role is to help direct the whole process. The care around revision surgeries at other centers is tertiary and many times not at the same place, but here at Duke we treat patients every step of the way at the same practice and have access to the latest treatments. I am an adult reconstruction surgeon here at Duke. I completed graduate school and residency training at Wake Forest University, followed by a fellowship in adult reconstruction at Duke. My choice to pursue a career in adult reconstruction was based on my passion for patient outcomes. I was truly inspired by patients’ satisfaction and the drastic improvement on their quality of life after total joint replacement. I enjoy the systematic approach to problem solving and the complexity of cases in adult reconstruction, especially in the setting of revision arthroplasty. My clinical and research interests are centered around periprosthetic joint infections, a disastrous complication which continues to pose a challenge to the orthopaedic community. Despite the progress made, our goal to prevent infection following arthroplasty surgery remains unaccomplished. It is not an exaggeration to claim that fear of infection lives in the heart of every arthroplasty surgeon who steps into the operating room. My mission is to provide a personalized assessment and treat each patient individually, based upon their condition and needs. I have more than 25 years of experience treating patients of all ages with spinal disorders. I have had an interest in the management of spinal disorders since starting my medical education. I performed residencies in both orthopaedic surgery and neurosurgery to gain a comprehensive understanding of the entire range of spinal disorders. My goal has been to find innovative ways to manage the range of spinal conditions, straightforward to complex. I have a focus on managing patients with complex spinal disorders. My patient evaluation and management philosophy is to provide engaged, compassionate care that focuses on providing the simplest and least aggressive treatment option for a particular condition. In many cases, non-operative treatment options exist to improve a patient’s symptoms. I have been actively engaged in clinical research to find the best ways to manage spinal disorders in order to achieve better results with fewer complications. I enjoy the challenge of helping patients with foot and ankle problems, including arthritis, tendon disorders or ruptures, and sports injuries. While my focus is my clinical practice, I keep my orthopaedic knowledge current by regularly participating as faculty in national and international orthopaedic foot and ankle conferences, conferences that frequently prompt me to bring advances to help the patients in my practice. I also continue to study many of the problems through dedicated foot and ankle research and share my clinical, surgical and research experience with national and international colleagues, the surgeons who attend the meetings, and the residents and fellows that I train each year. I am a sports medicine and shoulder surgery specialist. I try to treat all patients as individuals and family. I grew up in North Carolina where I attended public schools through college. I do complex shoulder surgeries, such as reverse shoulder arthroplasty, total shoulder replacement, and superior capsular reconstruction for irreparable rotator cuff tears. I also do complex knee ligament surgery (ACL and others). I have had the good fortune to study at Harvard Medical School and later with international leaders in knee and shoulder surgery in Switzerland and France. Recognition as the NC Sports Medicine Person of the Year and Outstanding Orthopaedic Resident Teacher at Duke University Medical School are among my greatest honors. I worked for 7 years in Cooperstown, New York where baseball injuries were a focus of mine. Returning athletes, grandparents, and weekend warriors to their highest level of function is my goal. Conservative care and rehabilitation are tried first, but if surgery is needed, I employ the most advanced, minimally invasive techniques using pain blocks for anesthesia to minimize the need for opioids and get home early and safely. I’m an orthopaedic surgeon that specializes in elbow, wrist and hand injuries. I treat fractures, sports injuries, and acute traumas, as well as more common ailments like tendonitis, carpal tunnel, arthritis and trigger fingers. Duke offers cutting edge technology and research, but we also excel in patient care. That combination makes Duke a special place for our patients. I pursued the specialty of Orthopaedic surgery as I was drawn to the opportunity to care for patients on their journey to maintain or return to an active and healthy lifestyle. In particular, the subspecialty of foot and ankle surgery was especially appealing as the foot and ankle serve as the foundation for the entire musculoskeletal system, with a broad array of pathology and patient populations being affected. I have the honor of caring for patients of all walks of life including all ages and activity levels. Dr. Robert is rated as an Experienced provider by MediFind in the treatment of Acute Pain. I was one of the first two fellowship trained North Carolina shoulder specialists when I began my practice at Duke in 1992. My career over the past 23 years has focused on shoulder care and shoulder surgery. My practice focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with all types of shoulder pain. All available resources are considered in improving the patient's symptoms and function without having to operate. But many patients need anatomic restoration of the shoulder to enable them the clinical improvement they seek. My practice Southeastern Orthopedics Shoulder Center, an affiliate of Duke Health, where I personally see and evaluate all patients during each of their visits. We try to personalize the care for all patients because even though we see many shoulders, it is paramount to state that every person's shoulder problem is different. Every person is different. We take pride in our pain management strategies for patients who have shoulder surgery. Our anesthesiologists are terrific with nerve blocks and we use multimodal strategies including cryotherapy to diminish the postoperative pain and improve overall the patients perioperative experience. What is the definition of Acute Pain?

Acute pain is defined as pain that occurs suddenly, is usually sharp, and lasts no longer than six months. Acute pain may be mild, moderate, or severe. Acute pain usually means that there is an underlying cause that needs to be evaluated. Acute pain goes away when the underlying cause has resolved. Some causes of acute pain include cuts and burns, dental work, muscle strains, inflammation, tissue damage, diseases, fractured bones, surgery, and labor and childbirth.

When should I see an Acute Pain doctor near Cary, NC?

There are various reasons why you may want to see a specialist, such as:

    • Your primary care provider recommends it.
    • Your condition requires expert knowledge and specialized care.
    • Your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment.
    • You need specialized testing or procedures.
    • You want a second opinion.

What should I consider when choosing an Acute Pain doctor near Cary, NC?

It’s important to see a provider with expertise in your specific condition. Each provider profile in MediFind’s doctor database includes information on which conditions they treat, years of experience, research contributions, languages spoken, insurance plans accepted, and more.

How does MediFind rank Acute Pain doctors near Cary, NC?

MediFind’s rankings are based on a variety of data sources, such as the number of articles a doctor has published in medical journals, participation in clinical trials and industry conferences, as well as the number of patients that provider sees for a given condition. Note that MediFind’s provider database is not based on user reviews, and providers do not pay to be included in the database.

What types of insurance are accepted by Acute Pain doctors near Cary, NC?

Most profiles in MediFind’s doctor database include a list of insurance plans accepted by that provider. However, it’s a good idea to contact the provider’s office to make sure they still accept your insurance, then doublecheck by contacting your insurance plan to confirm they’re in network.

How can I book an appointment online with an Acute Pain doctor near Cary, NC?

MediFind offers direct scheduling for certain providers using the “Request Appointment” button on that provider’s profile. If the schedule option is not available for a provider, tap the red “Show Phone Number” button on their profile to get their contact information. If you prefer to find providers who offer online scheduling, select “Schedules online” under the “Availability” category of the filter feature on the left side of the Acute Pain doctor search results page.

Why is it important to get a second opinion from a different Acute Pain doctor?

Second opinions are an opportunity to confirm a diagnosis and its root cause, learn about alternative treatment options, or simply gain peace of mind. Many people, especially those with serious diagnoses, get second opinions so they can understand all their options and make informed decisions, so don’t hesitate to get one if you have any doubts or need more information or clarification regarding your care. Note that some insurance plans require second opinions, while others don’t cover second opinions, so be sure to confirm with your insurance provider first.

How can I prepare for my appointment with an Acute Pain doctor near Cary, NC?

Prepare for your appointment by gathering the following items:

    • Copies of medical records (dating back at least one year)
    • Your medical history, including illnesses, medical conditions, surgeries, and other doctors you see
    • Family history of disease
    • List of current prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal remedies or supplements including names and doses
    • Allergies to medications, food, latex, insects, etc.
    • List of questions and concerns
    • Your insurance card

You might also contact the provider’s office to see if they offer transportation or childcare services or if you’re allowed to bring a loved one for support or to take notes during your visit.

What questions should I ask my Acute Pain doctor?

    Here are some sample questions:

    • Can you explain in simple terms what this condition is and how it’s treated?
    • What symptoms or side effects should I watch for?
    • What tests will be involved, and when can I expect results?
    • Are there other specialists I need to see?
    • What’s the best way to reach you if I have follow-up questions?

How can I learn about the latest clinical trials and research advances my Acute Pain doctor may know about?

MediFind’s Clinical Trials tool asks you a series of questions to help you narrow down your search by health condition, age, gender, location, how far you’re willing to travel, and more. Each question you answer filters down the number of trials until you find the ones that are most relevant to you.

MediFind’s Latest Advances tool features summaries of recent articles published in medical journals.
